DEFINITION

To supervise the day-to-day operations and activities of deputy probation officers involved with juvenile and/or adult investigations, supervision, and pre-trials, and to supervise and participate in probation operations as required. Employees in this classification train, schedule, supervise and formally evaluate the work of assigned personnel, and receive limited supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class functions at a first-line supervisory level and exercises responsibility for supervising and participating in all aspects of probation operations, and performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from the Assistant Chief Probation Officer and the Chief Probation Officer. Exercises direction over professional, technical, and clerical staff.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Plan, organize, assign, and approve work of probation staff. Supervise, train, and evaluate subordinate staff in the performance of their assigned duties. Ensure staff compliance with County and department policies and procedures. Investigate internal and external complaints against staff in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and applicable legal standards. Represent the department at public events and multi-agency collaborations. Testify and present departmental recommendations for sentencing in court. Review unusual and or difficult cases with Probation Officers. Conduct case file audits of probation officers' files to ensure compliance with department standards. Lead or assist in special departmental programs or projects. Maintain confidential information is accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations. Maintain computerized automated records. Conduct background investigations on department job applicants as directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience as a probation officer of which one (1) year must have been at the Deputy Probation Officer III level or higher.

Education:

High school or GED equivalency is required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in sociology, criminology, corrections, social services, psychology or closely related field.

Additional Requirements:

Possession of a valid California driver's license. Under certain circumstances, Human Resources may accept a valid driver's license from another state if applicant acknowledges his/her intent to acquire a California driver's license within three months by signing an acknowledgement form. Possession of a certificate of completion for 200 hours of Basic Probation Officers coursework. (must be attached to application to qualify) Completion of or the ability to complete Supervisor Core training as required by Standards in Training for Corrections (S.T.C.). (Attach to application if you have this) PC 832 Arrest, Search, and Seizure training. (must attach to application to qualify) Firearms Training required if armed.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an office and field environment; worker drives on surface streets and may be exposed to traffic hazards, adverse weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, wetness, air contaminants, fumes/dust, laboratory solvents and chemicals, skin irritants, violence, and above average noise.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires the mobility to work in an office and field environment. Requires the ability to sit at a desk and intermittently walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, run, balance and reach while performing office and field duties; operate a motor vehicle; lift and/or move weights of up to 25 pounds frequently and over 40 pounds occasionally; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. Must be able to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating office and police-issue equipment. Must be able to use a telephone to communicate verbally and a keyboard to communicate through written means, to review information and enter/retrieve data, and to see and read characters on a computer screen. Requires the strength and stamina to perform law enforcement duties, including handling firearms and making arrests.
