Overview The Africana Center at Tufts University works to implement programs designed to encourage and support the intellectual and individual growth and awareness of all Tufts Undergraduates. These programs include lectures, workshops, concerts, and films, as well as a range of additional activities and programming that reflect and celebrate the intellectual and cultural traditions of people in the African Diaspora. The Center also sponsors programs that promote an understanding of and respect for diversity, multiculturalism, and equity issues. What You'll Do The Center Director collaborates alongside Associate Dean for Student Inclusive Excellence to focus on identity development and empowerment; academic resources and supports; mentoring and professional development, and other issues related to campus community building and the holistic success of students. Applies deep subject matter expertise to provide leadership, direction and management for the Center, establishing the Center's mission, vision and services. Directs and evaluates programs and services related to multiple intersecting identities (i.e., gender, class, disability, sexual orientation, citizenship/nationality). Writes/authors grants and seeks funding sources for center programs and initiatives and oversees assessment and evaluation of programs and services. Cultivates relationships and represents center with school and university departments and resources. Oversees engagement and support for students, manages Center staff, finances and directs communications and outreach efforts.
Develops and approves goals, strategies and infrastructure to support and advance programs that promote scholarship and leadership within an affirming campus climate for marginalized and underrepresented student populations. Manages and evaluates educational programs and outreach activities pertaining to marginalized and underrepresented populations as well as the intersections of gender with race, ethnicity, nationality, class, disability, sexual orientation, and religion
Supports student development through oversight of programming, education and peer leadership programs and training
Support faculty on diversity, equity, inclusion and justice matters
Develops and leads Center support on topics of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and anti-racism
Manages resources and counseling for individual students and student groups/organizations navigating issues related to race and identity
Provides consultation, collaboration and expertise on racial equity and social justice issues to schools, on university committees and with external community organizations
Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of services and programs; approves recommendations and plans for improvements in services based on assessment data
Conducts long-term and strategic planning for center
Directs website and social media content and strategies
Directs and evaluates outreach and communication plans for center
Designs and delivers seminars, lectures and leads special events
Hires and trains staff and temporary employees
Conducts performance evaluations and assesses professional development opportunities for staff
Manages Center finances, conducts financial planning, analysis and prepares reports and projections for Dean's Office
Writes/authors grants and proposals for new funding opportunities or continued support
Designs and oversees center projects and strategic initiatives
Represents center and participates on school and university committees and is active in professional organizations
Manages overall center operations
