Job Description

Position Summary The Human Resources Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of human resources operations for a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This role serves as a strategic and hands-on partner to leadership, ensuring compliance, fostering a positive workplace culture, and supporting staff across the full employee lifecycle. This position is ideal for a proactive HR professional who thrives in a generalist "department of one" environment , balancing compliance, employee relations, and people-centered practices. Key Responsibilities Talent Management & Employee Lifecycle Lead full-cycle recruitment, including posting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding Oversee employee separations, including terminations and exit interviews Ensure consistent and equitable hiring and disciplinary practices Employee Relations & Performance Address employee relations issues, including conflict resolution and performance concerns Coach supervisors on performance management, documentation, and corrective action Conduct and document internal investigations as needed Compliance & Policy Administration Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, and MN-specific laws such as PFMLA) Maintain and update the Employee Handbook and HR policies Manage unemployment claims and responses Leave Management & Accommodations Administer PFMLA, FMLA, and other leave programs Coordinate and evaluate accommodation requests in compliance with ADA Track and manage leave documentation and communication Benefits & Compensation Administer employee benefits programs (health, retirement, leave, etc.) Serve as liaison with benefit providers and brokers Support compensation benchmarking and internal equity practices Risk Management & Claims Manage worker's compensation claims and return-to-work processes Ensure proper documentation and coordination with insurance providers Organizational Development & Culture Support leadership in building a positive, inclusive, and mission-aligned workplace culture Promote equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practices (especially relevant in human services nonprofits) Provide training and guidance on HR best practices Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience) 5-8+ years of progressive HR experience (nonprofit experience preferred) Strong knowledge of employment law and compliance Experience handling employee relations, investigations, and performance management Experience with leave administration (FMLA/PFMLA) and accommodations HR certification (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR) preferred Core Competencies Sound judgment and discretion with confidential information Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills Ability to balance compassion with accountability Highly organized with strong attention to detail Ability to operate both strategically and tactically
