Director of Human Resources Location Oakland, CA 94612 Date Posted June 17, 2026 Job ID 14791 Employment Type Contract To Hire Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for Director of Human Resources for a mission-driven, community-focused Nonprofit organization. This position is hybrid (onsite 1 day per week required) and based in Oakland, CA. This is a contract-to-hire opportunity.
POSITION OVERVIEW
This is a senior leadership opportunity for an HR professional to shape people strategy, culture, and organizational development within a values-centered philanthropic environment. The Director of Human Resources will serve as a key thought partner to executive leadership, guiding initiatives that strengthen employee engagement, leadership development, and organizational effectiveness. This role will also oversee HR operations and compliance while fostering inclusive, supportive, and high-trust workplace practices that align with the organization's mission and values.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead HR strategy and operations including employee relations, performance management, engagement, and leadership development through an equity-centered lens Partner with executive leadership to design and implement people strategies, organizational development initiatives, and change management efforts Oversee HR compliance, policies, and systems including recruitment, onboarding, benefits, compensation, and offboarding processes in collaboration with internal and external partners Foster a culture of belonging, collaboration, accountability, and psychological safety across teams and leadership levels Develop and support leadership capability through coaching, training, and professional development initiatives Guide implementation of inclusive, values-aligned HR practices that support staff growth, wellness, and organizational effectiveness
QUALIFICATIONS
Senior-level human resources experience with demonstrated leadership in HR strategy, organizational development, and employee engagement Experience building inclusive, people-centered workplace practices and supporting leadership development in complex organizations Strong ability to coach managers and leaders in performance, communication, and team development Experience in mission-driven, nonprofit, philanthropic, or socially focused environments strongly preferred Knowledge of HR compliance frameworks and employment practices, with the ability to navigate California employment standards
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a contract-to-hire opportunity with a temporary hourly rate of $72-$89/hour during the contract period. Upon conversion, the annual salary range is $150,000-$185,000, aligned with experience and scope of responsibility.
