POSITION SUMMARY
The Kennel Technician is responsible for providing daily care for shelter animals and maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy shelter environment. This position supports BCHS's mission by ensuring animals receive compassionate care and that shelter standards are consistently maintained.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Animal Care Feed animals according to established schedules and instructions. Ensure animals have continuous access to fresh, clean water. Monitor animals daily for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral concerns. Report concerns promptly to the Shelter Manager. Administer medications as directed. Provide exercise, enrichment, and socialization opportunities. Cleaning and Sanitation Clean and sanitize kennels daily. Clean and disinfect water buckets and food dishes daily. Clean litter boxes and cat housing areas daily. Perform laundry and maintain clean bedding. Follow all shelter sanitation, disease prevention, and biosecurity protocols. Maintain cleanliness throughout the shelter, including adoption and visitor areas. Animal Intake and Adoption Support Assist with animal intake procedures. Assist with animal transfers and transportation needs. Support adoption appointments and customer interactions. Help prepare animals for adoption events and public appearances. Maintain accurate records as assigned. Customer Service and Community Interaction Greet visitors and provide a positive experience. Answer basic questions regarding shelter services and available animals. Direct inquiries to the Shelter Manager when appropriate. Represent BCHS professionally and respectfully. Facility Support Assist with routine shelter maintenance and organization. Report maintenance, safety, or animal welfare concerns immediately. Assist with inventory management and supply organization.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 16 years of age. Previous animal handling experience preferred but not required. Compassion for animals and commitment to animal welfare. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong reliability, attendance, and work ethic. Excellent communication and customer service skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, clean, and work outdoors as needed. Ability to safely handle dogs and cats of varying sizes and temperaments.
WORK SCHEDULE
Part-time or full-time depending on organizational needs. Typical shifts are approximately 8:00-11:00 a.m. and/or 3:30-6:00 p.m., though schedules may vary based on shelter needs. Some evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required. Brown County Humane Society is committed to maintaining the highest standards of animal care.
