What You'll Do The Animal Care Liaison is an essential position at the Associated Humane Societies - Newark branch, combining animal care responsibilities with client interaction and interdepartmental collaboration. This role involves assisting with the general care, husbandry, and socialization of shelter animals while ensuring a clean and enriching environment. The Animal Care Liaison works closely with operational staff, the front desk, and other teams to facilitate the movement of animals, support adoption processes, and maintain quality assurance across various shelter operations. Additionally, this position includes assisting with animal transports and providing excellent interfacing with both other departments and clients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the general care, husbandry, and socialization of animals in the shelter as assigned by management.
- Walk dogs and provide enrichment activities to ensure proper exercise and mental stimulation.
- Clean animal enclosures following Associated Humane Societies (AHS) guidelines and protocols.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in animal rooms and corridors.
- Collaborate with medical, rounds, and intake teams to facilitate the movement of animals throughout the building.
- Assist the front desk with incoming calls, intakes, client interactions, and facilitate adoption meets.
- Ensure each animal has a kennel card and that their information is up-to-date.
- Participate in evening walkthroughs to maintain esteemed standards of animal care and well-being before closing the shelter for the day.
- Assist with animal transport to other shelter locations and related tasks, such as picking up donations from various locations.
- Perform other related duties and respond to miscellaneous shelter needs as assigned by management. What You Bring

- Ability to follow protocols and guidelines strictly.
- Physical capability to manage tasks such as walking dogs and cleaning enclosures.
- Previous experience in animal care or a related field.
- Embraces fear-free, as well as open-adoption philosophies.
- Embraces the human element of animal welfare as much as the animal component.
- Ability to work at an emotionally charged environment.
- Spanish speaking a plus, but not required Work Environment & Physical Requirements This role requires standing and walking for extended periods, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and lifting 40-50 pounds routinely.
Team members must be comfortable working around loud noises, cleaning chemicals, and animals that may be sick, injured, or potentially aggressive. The ability to maintain focus in a busy shelter environment is essential.
Pay:
$17.00 - $19.00 per hour
