Join us on the Animal Care/Kennel staff at Fluvanna SPCA! Are you passionate about animal welfare and ready to join a dynamic shelter? Fluvanna SPCA is looking for an energetic Dog Kennel staffer to make a real impact on the lives of animals in our care.
About Us:
Fluvanna SPCA is a small, forward-thinking, open-admission animal shelter with a 93% live-release rate whose mission is to rescue homeless dogs and cats and to place them in permanent, loving homes. We strive to adhere to modern, evidence-based philosophies and policies to minimize fear, anxiety, and stress for our animals.
Your Role:
As an Animal Care staffer, you'll provide hands-on daily care to our shelter animals! On a typical day, you'll ensure proper cleaning protocols for animal housing, equipment, and the shelter in general, exercise and enrich animals, including those who may be scared or anxious, feed the animals, promote their mental health and adoptability by reducing fear, anxiety, and stress in every way possible, provide information on the animals to other shelter staff, and help adopters find the right animal for them. The Fluvanna SPCA Animal Caregiver's primary responsibility is to provide for the humane care and quality of life for all animals in the shelter. Duties include but are not limited to exercising, cleaning, feeding, watering, and monitoring the animal's health and behavior. The Animal Caregiver will assist with adoptions and educate the public on responsible pet ownership and promote and support FSPCA's mission.
What We're Looking For:
A positive, professional demeanor. Compassion, patience, and understanding with all animals in shelter care. A willingness to learn and embrace change, ability to multitask in a dynamic environment. Must be a team player and self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision. Acquire and possess a thorough understanding of, and dedication to, modern animal welfare practices. Humane, evidence-based animal handling skills or ability to learn them. Evaluation and observation skills. Good communication skills. The Fluvanna SPCA Animal Caregiver's primary responsibility is to provide for the humane care and quality of life for all animals in the shelter. Duties include but are not limited to exercising, cleaning, feeding, watering, and monitoring the animal's health and behavior. The Animal Caregiver will assist with adoptions and educate the public on responsible pet ownership and promote and support FSPCA's mission. Animal Caregivers must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform moderately strenuous physical activity in standing, crouching, or kneeling positions. While efforts are made to maximize safety, staff may be subject to hot or cold temperatures, humidity, chemicals, animal scratches or bites, and loud noise.
Duties:
Ensure animals receive the proper food, water, enrichment and exercise daily. Perform cleaning and disinfection of animal housing areas per protocols. Perform general cleaning and upkeep of interior and exterior shelter spaces. Ensure work is done properly and in an efficient manner using available tools and materials. Ensure that sick and/or injured animals are separated from healthy ones. Assesses animal behavior using developed protocols. Assist Animal Treatment & Animal Flow staff Counsel potential adopters to help select the right pet. Provide information to adopters to ensure a smooth transition for the pet into their new home. Must be able to provide basic animal health care education. Assess animal personality to ensure the safety of staff and potential adopters. Other duties as needed to support shelter operations.

Schedule (for full-time) includes one weekend day (5 days/wk) Valid Virginia Driver's license required. Must be at least 18 years of age or older. Pay starts at $16 /hour. Animal Caregivers must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform moderately strenuous physical activity in standing, crouching, or kneeling positions. While efforts are made to maximize safety, staff may be subject to hot or cold temperatures, humidity, chemicals, animal scratches or bites, and loud noise.
