Job Description

Position summary This position implements established canine training practices, assists in the development of procedures, and shares responsibility for preparing and placing trained canines to meet the needs of The Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry. The individual must demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission, vision, and goals of Lutheran Church Charities. This role requires the ability to appropriately witness to and share the Christian faith in a manner that encourages and supports others in their spiritual growth. The individual must maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with organizational protocols and the chain of command. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to build and maintain positive, professional relationships. General Responsibilities
  • Complete training in LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry curriculum and methodologies and apply them consistently in all training environments.
  • Partner with volunteer apprentice trainers to strengthen communication and teamwork between dog and handler, offering positive, solution-oriented coaching in a safe and engaging environment.
  • Lead training sessions with confidence by maintaining group focus, providing clear instruction, and motivating participants.
  • Conduct community-based training outings to support real-world exposure and socialization for dogs in training.
  • Document canine progress through written updates, photos, and video, and communicate regularly with staff.
  • Train, socialize, evaluate, and provide in-home boarding for LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs in training as assigned.
  • Deliver handler training and constructive feedback to LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry affiliates.
  • Participate, as needed, in training events including handler/caregiver training, replacement handler training, regional gatherings, and affiliate trial periods, providing instruction and evaluation.
  • Maintain effective, professional communication and working relationships with both volunteers and staff.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and openness to a variety of dog training approaches and techniques within ministry standards.
  • Perform physical duties required for the role, including frequent bending, kneeling, and extended periods of walking.
  • Utilize basic computer systems, including Community Church Builders and Microsoft Outlook, for communication and documentation.
  • Support overall ministry operations by completing general tasks such as cleaning, organizing, and maintaining training spaces. Work Schedule Typical shifts are 8:00 a.m.
  • 4:30 p.m. or 12:00 p.m.
  • 8:30 p.m at our Northbrook location
  • time will also be spent at our East Dundee and Montgomery location.
Some weekend work is required and will be scheduled in advance. Skills required 1. K-9 training skills and knowledge of training methods. 2. Verbal communication skills. 3.
