Position Overview The Adoption Specialist guides prospective pet parents through an open, conversation-based adoption process. Anchored by Paws4ever's mission to build lifelong relationships between pets and people, this role matches dogs and cats rescued with forever homes. The Adoption Specialist provides compassionate customer service, educates adopters using positive reinforcement principles, and assists with pet care and adoption follow-ups. We are seeking an energetic and compassionate Animal Adoption Counselor to join our team! In this vital role, you will serve as the friendly face guiding prospective pet adopters through their journey, ensuring they find the perfect match while promoting animal welfare. Your enthusiasm for animals and excellent customer service skills will help create positive adoption experiences that last a lifetime. Key Responsibilities Adoption Counseling Facilitate inclusive, non-judgmental, conversation-based adoption interviews to understand client preferences and home environments. Conduct meet-and-greets between prospective adopters and available pets. Educate adopters on positive reinforcement dog training, pet health, nutrition, and transition care. Process adoption applications, contracts, and fees accurately using shelter management software. Animal Care & Enrichment Observe and document animal behavior and medical needs to provide accurate information to potential adopters. Assist with low-stress animal handling, safe movement, basic daily care, and enrichment activities as needed. Assist with animal handling, including dog handling, animal restraint, and manual handling during interactions or transport Support pet care activities such as feeding, and kennel maintenance to ensure animals are healthy and comfortable Facilitate outdoor work activities like walking dogs or assisting with outdoor enrichment programs Post-Adoption Support Conduct follow-up communications with adopters to provide post-adoption guidance, answer questions, and promote retention. Maintain clean, welcoming, and organized adoption center lobby and meeting spaces.
