Retriever Dog Trainer (Hunting & Field Work)

Company Overview Belvedere Property Management LLC is a private property management company. This is a unique opportunity to join a dedicated team of professionals responsible for the continued development and maintenance of private, historic property in Winnabow, North Carolina. We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Dog Trainer specializing in retrievers for upland and waterfowl hunting. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in training Labradors and/or spaniels, with a focus on developing reliable, field-ready hunting dogs. This individual will play a key role in maintaining and advancing a high-quality working dog program. This role is ideal for someone passionate about developing high-performance hunting dogs and contributing to a professional hunting or land management operation. The position requires attention to detail, patience, consistency, and a deep understanding of working dog behavior.

Hours:

Monday - Friday 40 hours per week with occasional weekends & holidays. 9 hours Monday through Thursday and 4 hours Friday. Qualifications 3+ years of professional dog training experience, preferably with hunting retrievers Proven experience training Labradors and/or spaniels for field use Strong understanding of retriever training techniques (force fetch, collar conditioning, handling, etc.) Experience with upland and/or waterfowl hunting environments Ability to read dog behavior and adjust training methods accordingly Strong work ethic and ability to work outdoors in varying conditions Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a team Valid driver's license Preferred Qualifications Experience training flushing spaniels (e.g., English Springer Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels) Field trial or hunt test experience (AKC, UKC, HRC, etc.) Background in kennel management or overseeing multiple dogs Experience working on a plantation, preserve, or guided hunting operation Key Responsibilities Train retrievers for upland bird and waterfowl hunting, including obedience, marking, blind retrieves, and steadiness Develop and execute structured training programs tailored to each dog's skill level and temperament Work with both Labradors and spaniels (flushers), with preference for candidates experienced in both Maintain and reinforce field manners, including honoring, handling, and whistle/hand signal responsiveness Condition dogs physically for endurance, strength, and performance in hunting environments Assist in selecting and evaluating dogs for training or breeding programs Maintain accurate training records and track progress for each dog Work with handlers/guests to ensure proper handling techniques and consistency in the field Ensure proper care, feeding, kennel cleanliness, and overall health of all dogs Collaborate with property/wildlife staff to align dog training with hunting operations Physical Requirements Ability to lift 50+ pounds Ability to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions Comfortable handling multiple dogs in active field environments Salary is based on experience. Housing available (if applicable).
