This paid position provides an opportunity to work hands-on with shelter dogs while collaborating with staff, volunteers, fosters, adopters, and EASEL's volunteer Dog Behavior Team. The ideal candidate is a knowledgeable, practical, and compassionate trainer who understands canine behavior and can safely work with dogs of various sizes, breeds, and temperaments. You will work within EASEL's established canine training and behavior program, reinforcing existing protocols while helping dogs develop the skills they need to thrive in the shelter, foster, and adoptive environments. Responsibilities Conduct hands-on obedience training and behavior-modification sessions with shelter dogs using positive reinforcement and other appropriate, humane training methods. Reinforce EASEL's established training and behavior-management protocols and provide individualized support based on each dog's needs. Safely handle and restrain dogs of various sizes, breeds, and temperaments during training. Work closely with the volunteer Dog Behavior Team, providing hands-on coaching, instruction, and guidance. Communicate with volunteers, fosters, and adopters to explain training techniques, behavioral strategies, and established management protocols. Document training progress and communicate behavioral concerns or changes to appropriate staff. Help maintain a clean, safe environment, including assisting with kennel cleaning, grooming, and general animal-care duties. Assist with setup and organization of training equipment and materials. Perform physical tasks such as moving supplies and equipment, lifting, standing, walking, and handling dogs throughout the workday. Qualifications & Skills Professional dog-training experience required. Strong understanding of canine body language, behavior, and animal-handling practices. Experience working with reactive, fearful, highly aroused, aggressive, or otherwise behaviorally challenging dogs. Working knowledge of classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Experience with positive reinforcement, counterconditioning, desensitization, and behavior modification. Ability to safely and effectively handle dogs with a wide range of sizes, breeds, temperaments, and behavioral needs. Strong communication and teaching skills, with the ability to clearly explain training techniques and behavioral strategies to staff, volunteers, fosters, and adopters. Ability to work collaboratively with a team while also making sound decisions when working independently with individual dogs. Professional dog-training certification preferred. Shelter or animal-rescue experience preferred. Veterinary technician, veterinary assistant, kennel, grooming, or other professional animal-care experience is a plus. Strong understanding of general animal care and safe restraint practices.
