Who We Are Founded in 1906, Associated Humane Societies (AHS) is the largest animal sheltering system in New Jersey, operating four shelters and Popcorn Park Animal Refuge. What We Do AHS provides comprehensive sheltering, adoption, veterinary, and rescue services for thousands of animals each year. Our team works tirelessly to reduce length of stay, expand placement opportunities, and ensure every animal receives the individualized care they deserve. By building strong partnerships and utilizing strategic population management, we strive to create the best possible outcomes for animals in our care. What You'll Do As the Cat Coordinator, you'll play a critical role in the intake, care, movement, and placement of cats and other small animals specifically at our Newark shelter. You will ensure each animal receives appropriate housing, medical care, and behavioral support, while developing and implementing exit strategies that maximize placement opportunities.
Your responsibilities will include:
Making daily decisions regarding placement of cats and small animals during intake and throughout their shelter stay. Overseeing movement of cats and small animals through medical care, behavioral assessment, and availability for adoption or transfer. Monitoring housing to ensure environments support animal health and well-being. Creating and managing individualized exit plans for cats, including rescue partnerships and out-of-state transfers. Securing commitments from partner organizations for cats requiring specialized medical or behavioral care. Preparing transfer documentation, including medical records, spreadsheets, and health certificates. What You'll Bring Experience working with cats and small animals in a shelter, rescue, or veterinary setting preferred. Strong understanding of animal care, population management, and placement strategies. Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain partnerships. Compassion, patience, and a commitment to improving animal welfare. Flexibility to work non-traditional shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
