Job Description

The Night Cosmetology Instructor contributes to the department by demonstrating the knowledge and skills necessary to instruct and supervise students in the cosmetology discipline during evening hours. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the continuity and quality of instruction for evening students. The instructor promotes the safety, health, and comfort of students, employees, and guests of the College, while actively supporting the mission and goals of the College. Provides evening instruction in Cosmetology courses that meet the standards set by the NC State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners and the North Carolina Community College System, while adhering to departmental course guidelines to ensure full regulatory compliance. Demonstrates cosmetic art techniques in a simulated salon environment to help students develop the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for licensure. Trains students in all areas of Cosmetology in preparation for the NC State Board Examination, maintaining a high pass rate. Completes all required documentation, including enrollment forms, service logs, transfers, drops, and State Board testing applications. Maintains accurate student records for grades, attendance, hours, and services. Supervises salon lab operations during evening hours and attends to patrons as needed. Ensures compliance with sanitation, safety, dress code, and other State Board requirements; meets with State Board inspectors and maintains an "A" salon grade. Evaluates student performance using cosmetology rubrics and provides regular, constructive feedback. Utilizes the learning management system (LMS) and relevant software for instruction, grading, and course management. Maintains and updates syllabi in accordance with departmental guidance; plans course content and coordinates guest speakers as appropriate. Monitors inventory of supplies and ensures safe and sanitary practices in accordance with NC State Board requirements. Establishes and maintains positive communication with the Cosmetology Director, faculty, staff, students, and clients. Demonstrates professionalism and follows the appropriate chain of supervision at all times. Advises prospective, incoming, and current students; assists in developing and monitoring student plans of study; conducts advising sessions as needed. Participates in departmental planning, program reviews, and curriculum updates. Attends training sessions, workshops, conferences, and professional development opportunities to maintain technical and instructional knowledge. Supports and adheres to all institutional policies and procedures. Serves on college committees as assigned. Promotes Brunswick Community College and the Cosmetology Department through instruction, community engagement, and student support. Effectively uses Microsoft Office, email, Moodle/Canvas, Colleague, and scheduling software. Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. Teaches Cosmetology courses during evening hours as part of the instructional schedule. Performs other duties as assigned. Holds a current North Carolina Cosmetologist and Instructor License.
  • Associate Degree in Cosmetology or willingness to earn an Associate Degree in Cosmetology within one year of employment.
  • Minimum of three years of salon management or related professional experience.
  • Teaching experience, preferably in a community college or higher education setting.
  • Skilled in teaching Pivot Point and/or Milady methods.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a student-centered learning environment and the comprehensive community college mission.
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Maintains confidentiality and handles sensitive information appropriately.
