Run by a non-profit association, River View is one of Portland's oldest endowment care cemeteries, maintained with the utmost concern for both natural beauty and family legacy. River View Cemetery Funeral Home works together with the cemetery on the grounds of our historic landmark, providing professional, respectful, dignified, and compassionate service by honoring lives lived at the time of need or by offering options for pre-planning. River View Cemetery Funeral Home is a for-profit that operates with its own Board of Directors, but as a wholly owned subsidiary of River View Cemetery, each year the profits of the funeral home are available to cemetery to help support this historic landmark serving the Portland community. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will have a entrepreneurial and collaborative leadership style with experience working directly with senior leadership and a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. They will be a relationship-builder, and a strong facilitator. They will have experience in funeral service technology and innovation. They will direct all activities relating to funeral services- preparation of funeral home facilities, supervision of funeral directors, perform as an arranger when required. Manage costs in a disciplined manner and encourage profitable case volume growth. Responsible for short-term planning as well as achieving annual sales revenue and production targets, Profit & Loss (P&L) goals, developing a professional and effective staff, and providing exceptional customer service. Fiscal Oversight Develop annual business plan, budget and revenue goals with Executive Director and the Board of Directors. Monitor and review monthly and quarterly financial reports. Report financial and variance information to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. Accountable for monitoring and achieving annual financial goals. Understand industry finances, how daily activities impact financial outcomes, and making appropriate sustainable business decisions. Approve expenditures and invoices including overtime. Manage At-Need accounts receivables. Monitor Pre-Need Funeral Sales goals and assist sales team. Regularly monitors office procedures to ensure all financial guidelines are being followed. General Operations Manage the day to day activities ensuring on-time services that exceed customer expectations. For customers and employees, remove barriers, encourage ideas, and identify improvements. Resolves moderately complex problems; provides resolution guidance to employees and empowering accountability. Assure the location's operating practices comply with applicable federal & state regulations and River View policies. Manage, coordinate and oversee embalming, dressing, casketing and preparation of human remains. Coordinate staff assistance with locations for services, visitations or identification viewings as business needs warrant. Responsible for establishing location goals and priorities. Develop, communicate, and monitor goals, priorities, processes and procedures. Effectively present and communicate River View's values, and goals to employees. Collaborate with the cemetery and administration for resource sharing, ideas, and business or operational enhancements. Direct and supervise the administrative and support services of the funeral home, repair and maintenance services, approve of expenditures for operation of the funeral home and collection of receivables. Conduct all ongoing training and safety classes including formaldehyde testing as required annually and staff meetings on a regular basis Coordinate staff assistance with locations for services, visitations or identification viewings as business needs warrant. Ensure close coordination with governmental agencies and service organizations such as the Social Security Administration, Veterans Administration, coroner's office, churches, florists, etc. Work with River View's management team on products, processes, and technology needs and improvements. Use and ensure employees are trained and proficient in funeral specific software. Develop and grow celebration of life program to meet the needs of customers. Maintain building, facilities, and grounds in a clean, manicured, and working order budgeting appropriately for repairs including equipment and furniture. Ensure all safety, quality control, and compliance standards are adhered. Marketing and Outreach Awareness of River View's standing in the Portland metro area and ability to adjust to changing client needs to increase call volume and pre-arranged funerals. May network with key community leaders to build business relationships, influence, and support the community. Participate in community, civic, or other organizations. Plan market growth to include a comprehensive public relations program. Develop passive lead generation opportunities and marketing strategies such as advertising. Develop and/or implement plans to monitor customer service and on-line community reviews. People Development Develop a strong, trusting, and reliable team. Understand team members career aspirations and provide assignments to develop skills and/or close gaps. Constructively address issues and provide tangible and appropriate feedback. Monitor training and licensing requirements ensuring staff is re-trained/licensed prior to expiration. Responsible for screening candidates (internal and external) and hiring or promoting a skilled and effective staff. Establishes pay, recommends pay increases, special pays, and career advancements. Discipline staff, as necessary. Writes development plans to close behavior or skill gaps. Collaborates with Human Resources throughout discipline, development, and termination processes. Recommends and discusses terminations with Executive Director. Education, Certifications, and Licensure 5+ years of experience in the operations of a Funeral Home. Must be a licensed funeral director and embalmer or the ability to obtain a state license. Requires graduation from an accredited school of embalming or mortuary science. A degree in business management or related field is preferred. Experience & Skills At least five (5) years industry experience in the applicable discipline with progressively increased responsibilities. Track record in understanding industry innovations, technology, competitive pricing, demographic patterns, and market competition. Experience working in a cemetery and/or combination funeral and cemetery facility is preferred. At least two (2) years' experience managing people or projects required; budgeting and expense control experience strongly preferred. Knowledgeable in Financial and Business acumen. Professional interpersonal skills as well as cultural sensitivity and tactfulness to interact with a variety of cultures and language barriers. Proficient in MS Office suite including mail, word, excel, & power point.
