Job Description

This position performs and oversees institutional laundry operations within the Leon County Detention Facility in a civilian capacity. The primary responsibility is to ensure a continuous and adequate supply of clean uniforms, bedding, towels, and other textile items for inmates and staff. Duties include operating commercial laundry equipment, maintaining established sanitation and safety standards, and overseeing inmate workers assigned to laundry operations as applicable. The position adheres to the agency's core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect, and a commitment to excellence. To be successful, the employee must demonstrate working knowledge of Florida Model Jail Standards, Jail Standard Operational Procedures, and LCSO General Orders, along with strong safety awareness. Additional requirements include familiarity with the geographic layout of the Leon County Detention Facility, effective written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal and problem-solving abilities, customer service skills, and the ability to promote teamwork and collaboration. Operate industrial washers, dryers, presses, and folding equipment safely and efficiently. Inspect laundered items for cleanliness, stains, and repairs needed. Train, supervise, and monitor inmate laundry workers to ensure adherence to safety and security procedures. Maintain accurate logs of laundry loads, supplies used, and equipment maintenance. Follow safety protocols for chemical handling, heat exposure, and infection control. Sort and weigh laundry items by fabric type, color, and sanitation requirements. Report mechanical problems or safety hazards to a supervisor promptly. Issue inmate uniforms, bedding, and linens according to facility policy. Manage the inventory of linens, clothing, detergents, and cleaning agents. Ensure compliance with all jail regulations, security protocols, and departmental standards. Knowledge of institutional laundry procedures and fabric care. Knowledge in operating and troubleshooting commercial laundry equipment. Ability to have strong attention to detail and time management abilities. Ability to maintain composure and ensure safety in a secure environment. Ability to have effective communication and leadership in supervising inmate workers. Ability to act effectively in diverse and challenging interpersonal situations. Ability to analyze problems quickly and take appropriate action under stress. Ability to perform independently without direct supervision, exercising discretion, caution, and self-control under adverse conditions. Ability to maintain mental alertness necessary to observe activities and respond appropriately. Ability to work effectively as part of a team to ensure compliance with policies and procedures. Ability to prepare and deliver clear, concise, and objective written and oral reports. High school diploma or GED required. Working knowledge of laundry machinery and basic maintenance required. At least one year of experience in commercial, institutional, or correctional laundry operations is preferred. Familiarity with infection control and sanitation practices preferred. Work is completed in a Detention facility environment. Employees will have contact with inmates during the normal course of the workday. Work is completed in eight (8) hour shifts; 8:00 am-5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Employees may be required to work extended work hours to meet operational needs or in the event of an emergency.
