Our work includes furniture upholstery, cushion fabrication, slipcovers, pillows, window treatments, custom soft goods, and detailed fabric construction. Role Description Palmetto Upholstery & Fabrics is seeking a full-time, on-site Upholsterer / Seamster-Seamstress to join our Hilton Head Island team. This role is ideal for a skilled craftsperson with experience in upholstery, sewing, cushion construction, window treatments, or custom fabric work. The position may include hands-on upholstery work, sewing, measuring, cutting, fitting, fabric preparation, cushion construction, and finishing details. Depending on experience, the candidate may assist with or independently complete furniture upholstery, cushion covers, pillows, slipcovers, drapery, Roman shades, valances, cornices, and other custom fabric projects. The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail, takes pride in quality workmanship, and is comfortable working with upholstery fabrics, performance fabrics, outdoor fabrics, trims, welt cord, foam, Dacron, zippers, linings, and related materials. This person should be able to follow work orders, interpret measurements, communicate clearly with team members, and help ensure each project is completed accurately and professionally. Responsibilities Perform upholstery, sewing, cutting, fitting, and finishing work for furniture and custom fabric projects. Sew and construct cushions, pillows, slipcovers, window treatments, and other soft goods. Assist with or complete furniture upholstery projects, including chairs, sofas, banquettes, ottomans, benches, headboards, and related pieces. Measure, cut, and prepare fabric according to work orders, patterns, and project specifications. Create and apply welt cord, zippers, boxing, panels, pleats, trims, linings, and other finished details. Work with foam, Dacron, batting, webbing, springs, frames, and other upholstery materials as needed. Perform furniture fitting and adjustments to ensure a clean, professional appearance. Match patterns, align seams, and maintain consistent quality across all finished pieces. Read and follow work orders, measurements, design notes, and special instructions. Collaborate with upholsterers, seamsters/seamstresses, designers, and other team members. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Support customer service as needed by helping clarify project details, construction options, or fabric requirements. Qualifications Experience in upholstery, sewing, cushion construction, window treatments, alterations, furniture restoration, or custom fabric work. Strong sewing skills, including accurate cutting, stitching, fitting, and finishing. Upholstery experience with furniture frames, cushions, foam, Dacron, welt cord, and fabric application preferred. Experience with industrial sewing machines and upholstery-weight materials preferred. Knowledge of slipcovers, pillows, drapery, Roman shades, valances, cornices, or other window treatments is a plus. Ability to measure accurately and follow written work orders or design instructions. Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality craftsmanship. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good communication skills and a professional attitude. Prior experience in an upholstery shop, sewing workroom, drapery workroom, alterations shop, or furniture restoration setting preferred. Schedule and Location This is a full-time, on-site position located in the Hilton Head Island, South Carolina area. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and skilled with their hands. They may come from an upholstery, sewing, tailoring, drapery, alterations, or furniture restoration background. Most importantly, they should care about producing clean, durable, well-finished work and be comfortable working on a wide range of custom projects.
