This is a position for a veteran maker who understands the "old-school" way of building furniture—someone who values the feel of the twine, the tension of the webbing, and the legacy of a well-built frame. The Work of a Traditional Craftsman We aren't looking for a hobbyist or an artist; we are looking for a practitioner of the craft. Your focus will be on the honest, manual labor required to restore furniture to its highest standard using time-honored techniques. Expectations of the
Trade:
Foundation First:
Expert proficiency in traditional 8-way hand-tied springs, burlap application, and hand-stitched edges.
Material Mastery:
A tactile understanding of how different fabrics—from heavy velvets to delicate linens—behave over various paddings.
The Build:
Managing the entire process from the bare wood up, ensuring every layer is applied with the patience and skill that only a decade of experience can provide.
Tool & Machine Proficiency:
Mastery of the bench, including the proper use of traditional hand tools and industrial sewing machines. Requirements To maintain the quality our shop is known for, we have strict requirements for this role:
Tenured Expertise:
Minimum of 10 years of professional bench experience in an upholstery shop.
Work Ethic:
This is a full-time commitment. You must be reliable, punctual, and prepared to work a 5-day week during standard business hours. Quality over

While we maintain a production schedule, we never sacrifice the integrity of the craft. You must have the discipline to do the job right the first time.

A steady, focused presence in the shop, capable of working independently while being a dependable part of our small team. The Spruce Workshop Spruce is a place where the trade is respected. We provide a clean, professional environment in Austin for a craftsman to practice their skill without the distractions of a typical "design-heavy" studio.
