$16/hr Position Overview he Transformer Prep / Sanding Technician is responsible for preparing transformers and related equipment for the painting and finishing process. This position performs surface preparation activities including sanding, grinding, cleaning, washing, masking, and inspecting transformer surfaces to ensure they are properly prepared for coating or painting. The position requires the regular use of hand-held orbital sanders, grinders, and other sanding or surface-preparation tools. Employees must be able to identify rust, bumps, rough areas, and other surface imperfections that could affect the quality of the finished product. This is a physically demanding position performed in an open-shop industrial environment where employees may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, sun, dust, noise, and other changing environmental conditions. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Sand and prepare transformers and related components for painting and finishing. Use hand-held orbital sanders, grinders, sanding tools, and other approved equipment to remove rust, excess material, rough areas, and surface imperfections. Inspect transformer surfaces to identify bumps, rust, debris, uneven areas, and other defects requiring additional preparation. Grind, sand, or smooth designated surfaces according to work instructions and quality requirements. Wash and clean transformers to remove dirt, dust, grease, residue, and other impurities before painting. Properly prepare surfaces to promote paint and coating adhesion. Tape, mask, or cover designated areas that should not be painted or coated. Remove tape, masking materials, and other preparation materials as required. Follow work orders, production instructions, and established work processes. Verify that assigned units are properly prepared before advancing them to the painting or coating process. Safely operate assigned hand and power tools. Inspect tools and equipment before use and report damaged or unsafe equipment. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Properly handle and store tools, materials, and PPE. Follow all company safety policies and procedures. Wear required PPE, including respiratory protection, paint/protective suits, gloves, eye protection, and safety-toe footwear, as required by the task and work area. Communicate quality concerns, damaged components, or surface defects to the appropriate supervisor. Work cooperatively with painters, production personnel, quality personnel, and supervisors to maintain production flow. Perform additional production, material-preparation, cleaning, or general labor duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Must meet client-specific background checks, drug screening requirements
Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to accurately complete written and electronic records. Strong attention to detail and ability to identify deviations from established specifications. Ability to work in extreme cold temperatures. Ability to safely operate or learn to operate hand-held sanding and grinding equipment. Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to work with hand and power tools. Must be able to work independently and as part of a production team. Must be willing and able to work in an open-shop industrial environment with exposure to changing weather and temperature conditions. Must be able to wear all required PPE for the duration necessary to perform assigned duties. Must meet applicable requirements for the use of respiratory protection when required by the position. Work Environment This position is performed primarily in an industrial open-shop production environment. Employees may work indoors, outdoors, or in partially enclosed work areas and must be prepared for changing environmental and weather conditions. Employees may be exposed to heat, cold, rain, sun, humidity, dust, dirt, metal particles, paint-preparation residue, vibration, and elevated noise levels. The use of sanders and grinders may generate dust, debris, sparks, vibration, and noise. Work is performed around transformers, industrial equipment, tools, production activities, and other employees. Appropriate PPE must be worn as required, which may include respirators, protective paint suits or coveralls, gloves, safety glasses/face protection, hearing protection, and safety-toe shoes or boots. Employees are required to follow all established safety procedures regarding power tools, respiratory protection, hazardous materials, PPE, and industrial equipment. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to: Frequently lift and carry materials, equipment, or tools weighing up to 50 pounds. Stand and walk for approximately 75% or more of the work shift, depending on production needs. Frequently kneel, squat, crouch, bend, stoop, and reach. Perform repetitive upper-body, arm, wrist, and hand movements while sanding and preparing surfaces. Maintain a secure grip and control of hand-held orbital sanders, grinders, and other power tools. Push, pull, position, and handle tools and materials as required. Work at different heights and positions around transformers and equipment. Perform physically demanding work for extended periods. Work indoors and outdoors in hot, cold, sunny, rainy, humid, or other changing weather conditions. Tolerate dust, noise, vibration, and other conditions associated with sanding and grinding operations. Wear required PPE, including respiratory protection and protective clothing, for extended periods when required. Possess sufficient vision and visual attention to identify rust, bumps, uneven surfaces, and other imperfections requiring correction.
