None required, RVT preferred Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated RVT/Veterinary Assistant to join our Ophthalmology team. This role involves supporting advanced ophthalmic diagnostics and procedures, assisting with patient care, and helping deliver exceptional service to patients and clients. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, excellent attention to detail, and a passion for specialty medicine. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside board-certified specialists in a collaborative environment focused on delivering the highest standard of veterinary ophthalmic care. Responsibilities Assist veterinarians during ophthalmic examinations, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures Obtain and document patient histories and ophthalmic observations Prepare patients for diagnostic testing and procedures Administer medications and treatments as directed by veterinarians Assist with ophthalmic diagnostic procedures, including: Tonometry Schirmer Tear Testing (STT) Fluorescein staining Ocular ultrasound Electroretinography (ERG) Advanced ophthalmic imaging Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures Collect and process laboratory samples as needed Maintain accurate medical records and patient documentation Provide client education regarding medications, home care, and follow-up instructions Maintain ophthalmic equipment, treatment areas, and exam rooms Support a positive client experience through compassionate communication and service Requirements Prior veterinary technician or veterinary assistant experience preferred Previous specialty or ophthalmology experience preferred but not required Knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, and physiology Ability to safely handle and restrain dogs and cats Strong attention to detail and organizational skills Excellent communication and client service skills Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment Comfortable working in a fast-paced specialty hospital setting RVT license preferred but not required Available to work at least one weekend day Key Duties and Responsibilities (The following duties and responsibilities serve as examples of the kinds of work that may be performed. Care for ophthalmology patients in a busy specialty and emergency hospital setting Assist with advanced ophthalmic diagnostics, procedures, and treatments Collaborate with fellow staff and doctors to provide excellent, gold-standard patient care Communicate effectively with clients and hospital departments to coordinate patient care Prioritize tasks based on patient needs and appointment flow Maintain safe, sanitary, and organized patient care areas Recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly Place and maintain IV catheters as needed Collect diagnostic samples and perform laboratory procedures Administer medications and treatments under veterinarian direction Monitor sedated and recovering patients when applicable Assist with medical record documentation and treatment tracking Maintain an open style of communication with staff and doctors, with a willingness to learn and grow Skills and Competencies Strong patient handling and restraint skills Knowledge of common ophthalmic diseases and treatments preferred Proficiency in obtaining ophthalmic diagnostic tests preferred Understanding of sterile technique and procedural preparation Ability to accurately administer medications and treatments Strong organizational and multitasking skills Excellent client communication and education skills Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced specialty environment Commitment to patient advocacy and compassionate care Strong attention to detail and medical record accuracy Physical Requirements Must be able to: Stand for up to 80% of a 10-hour shift Walk up to 50% of a 10-hour shift Sit for approximately 20% of a 10-hour shift Lift up to 50 pounds Frequently bend, squat, kneel, and reach above shoulder height Occasionally climb and twist Perform repetitive hand movements for tasks such as grasping and fine manipulation Utilize all sensory skills (speech, vision, smell, touch, hearing), corrected to near-normal levels Job Type Full-time Pay $28+ per hour depending on experience and skill level (plus weekend differentials where applicable) The pay for this position is determined by level of experience, licensure, credentials, and education.
