As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll play a vital role in helping animals receive the medical care they need while supporting a team dedicated to improving the lives of pets and the people who love them. What You'll Do As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll support our veterinarians and veterinary team by providing compassionate medical care and ensuring high standards of treatment for animals in our shelter and surgery programs.
Key responsibilities include:
Assisting veterinarians during examinations and treatments Safely restraining and handling animals during medical procedures Administering medications and treatments as directed Calculating medication dosages accurately Monitoring and communicating patient status and medical concerns Assisting with surgical preparation, patient recovery, and post-operative care Maintaining accurate medical records and entering data into shelter software Cleaning kennels and providing daily animal care Restocking medical and surgical supplies Assisting with humane euthanasia procedures when necessary Working collaboratively with shelter staff, volunteers, and other departments to support positive outcomes for animals What We're Looking For Successful candidates are: Passionate about animal welfare and HSPPR's mission Compassionate, patient, and professional when working with animals and people Comfortable handling animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions Detail-oriented and committed to maintaining accurate records Able to prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced environment Strong communicators who work well as part of a team
Qualifications Required:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent Ability to read, write, communicate effectively, perform basic math, and solve routine problems
Preferred:
Previous animal handling experience Experience in a veterinary clinic, shelter, or animal care environment Physical Requirements This is an active, hands-on role that requires: Standing and walking for extended periods Frequent lifting and moving of animals and equipment weighing 25+ pounds and occasionally 40+ pounds Working around animals, animal allergens, cleaning agents, and varying environmental conditions Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, and crouching Schedule Full-time schedule Regular schedule includes at least one weekend day Occasional evening, holiday, and additional weekend work may be required based on organizational needs Why Join HSPPR?
