Job Summary:
The Certified Veterinary Technician is crucial in providing compassionate and high-quality care to both shelter and client-owned animals. They are the veterinarian's primary medical support responsible for helping monitoring the health of animals in the shelter, provide treatment, perform diagnostics, and prepare animals for surgery both in the community clinic and the shelter. The Veterinary Technician Assistant has a vital role in keeping the clinic and equipment clean and operating smoothly. They are also responsible in assisting in the care of shelter and client-owned animals in surgery, treatment, and clinic appointments. Primary Responsibilities (Includes but is not restricted to): Patient Care and Nursing Taking vital signs, administering medications and treatments as directed by the veterinarian Laboratory and Diagnostics Collecting and processing samples and performing radiographs Suregery and Anesthesia Preparing patients for surgery, setting up equipment, monitoring anesthesia and providing post-op care Client Communications Gathering patient histories, explain home care instructions, and educating clients on preventative care and nutrition. Housekeeping and Maintenance Understand the importance of and maintaining a clean orderly hospital environment, and maintenance of equipment. Administration Updating medical records, managing inventory, supervising and training JHACC staff.
Qualifications:
- Veterinary Technician Certification and Liscensed in Colorado (CVT)
- High School diploma or equivalent (VTA)
- Verbal communication skills
- Customer service skills
- Able to work with disinfectants and cleaning supplies
- Valid Driver's license or
ID Physical Requirements:
- This position requires the ability to walk, bend, kneel, stoop, stand, and reach during a minimum 8-hour shift.
- Any allergies to animals must be controllable through medication.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds independently; more with assistance.
- Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people and understand written directions.
- Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand or give information in person or over the telephone.
- Fine motor skills adequate for utilizing hospital equipment such as electric clippers, syringes, laboratory equipment, radiology equipment, computer, etc.
Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed to cleaning chemicals, x-ray radiation, unpleasant odors, loud noises, animal waste, and other bodily fluids; hazards of aggressive patients such as scratches or bites; hazards associated with possible exposure to contagious/infectious organisms or zoonotic disease.
Knowledge and skills:
- Work requires continual attention to detail. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to prioritize duties and juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
- Knowledge of animal breeds, behaviors and handling

Journey Home Animal Care Center Client Service Duties:
- Provides overall basic customer relations/customer service, answer questions.
- Educates clients on responsible pet ownership and animal care.
- Communicating with clients concerning the health of (shelter or client) animals, and answer general questions about JHACC procedures and veterinary care.
- Provide accurate information and friendly professional service during client appointments and surgery check out.
- Actively promotes Journey Home Animal Care Center programs and events
- Represents Journey Home Animal Care Center in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
