Job Description

Veterinary Kennel Assistant (Part-Time)Position Type This is a part-time position. Weekly hours will vary based on hospital needs, staffing levels, and patient/boarding volume. Part-time employees must maintain flexibility to support operational needs as required. At this time, we are not accepting seasonal or temporary applicants. This is a year-round position requiring a long-term commitment. Schedule & Availability Requirements Candidates must have full open availability and be able to work AM and PM shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays. This is a year-round part-time position, and limited, seasonal, or restricted availability will not be considered. Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays are required and non-negotiable for this role. Holiday coverage is a condition of employment and is discussed during the hiring process. Requests for major holidays may be considered but are not guaranteed and will be reviewed based on staffing needs and hospital operations. Please note that Sundays are not full scheduled shifts. Sunday responsibilities consist of brief, scheduled care visits for overnight boarders, which include feeding, walking, medicating, and general care. These visits occur at designated times (6:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 7:00 PM). All new hires are required to complete a training and evaluation period. During this time, performance, reliability, attendance, ability to follow protocols, and overall fit within the team will be assessed. Continued employment is contingent upon successfully meeting hospital standards and demonstrating the ability to perform required job duties safely, effectively, and consistently. Position Summary Veterinary Kennel Assistants are responsible for the daily care, safety, and monitoring of hospitalized patients and boarding animals. This role is essential in maintaining a clean, secure, and professional environment while supporting veterinarians and hospital staff. Candidates must be dependable, attentive, and capable of working in a fast-paced medical and boarding setting. Primary Responsibilities Provide daily care for boarding and hospitalized animals, including feeding, watering, walking, bathing, and cleaning enclosures. Monitor animals closely for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral changes and report concerns immediately to supervisory staff. Safely handle and restrain animals of various sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions. Administer medications as directed, following proper hospital protocols and training. Maintain strict cleanliness and sanitation standards throughout kennels, treatment areas, and hospital grounds. Ensure doors, gates, and enclosures remain secure at all times to prevent escapes or injury. Assist veterinarians, technicians, and hospital staff as directed. Treat all animals with professional, compassionate care at all times, including deceased patients. Maintain professional communication with clients and team members. Physical & Skill Requirements Ability to lift, carry, and restrain animals safely. Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, and cleaning throughout shifts. Strong attention to detail and observational skills. Ability to follow instructions, hospital protocols, and safety procedures consistently. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Professional Expectations Arrive on time and be fully prepared to begin work at the scheduled start time. Maintain professionalism, reliability, and a strong work ethic. Maintain a clean and professional appearance in accordance with hospital standards. Follow all hospital policies, protocols, and safety procedures. Participate in all required training sessions and staff meetings. Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient and client information. Experience Prior animal care, kennel, daycare, boarding, or veterinary experience is preferred but not required. Candidates must demonstrate reliability, willingness to learn, and the ability to perform required duties. Compensation Compensation will be reviewed six months from the date of hire and may be adjusted based on performance, reliability, attendance, and overall contribution to the hospital.
