PetVets Animal Hospital | Oak Park, IL Full-Time | In-Person | Previous Veterinary Hospital Experience Required Some days you'll be helping hold a nervous dog for an exam. Five minutes later you may be resetting a treatment area, bringing the next patient into a room, helping a technician, cleaning up after a patient, stocking supplies or finding exactly what a veterinarian needs before anyone has to ask twice. That is veterinary assisting. PetVets Animal Hospital in Oak Park is looking for an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our medical team. We are an independent, established small animal general practice that also offers specialty services and is home to 30 employees. Our assistants are an important part of what keeps patient care moving throughout the day. We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys being part of the hands-on work of a veterinary hospital — someone who notices what needs to be done, is willing to jump in, cares about doing things correctly and understands that good patient care includes both the rewarding moments and the decidedly unglamorous ones. What you'll do Our veterinary assistants work alongside veterinarians, technicians and other assistants throughout the hospital. Depending on your training and experience, responsibilities may include: Assisting with safe handling and restraint of dogs and cats Bringing patients into exam rooms and helping prepare them for the veterinarian or technician Assisting veterinarians and technicians during examinations, treatments and procedures Helping prepare treatment, procedure and patient-care areas Monitoring and caring for patients as directed by the medical team Collecting or assisting with samples and other clinical tasks within your training Keeping exam rooms and treatment areas clean, stocked and ready for the next patient Cleaning cages, runs, equipment and patient-care areas Preparing supplies and helping keep the hospital organized Laundry, dishes, and the work required throughout the day to keep a veterinary hospital clean and functioning Communicating clearly with technicians, veterinarians, reception and other assistants Stepping in where needed when patient care or hospital workflow changes unexpectedly No two days are exactly the same, and priorities can change quickly. Who tends to do well here You don't need to know everything on your first day. You do need to be someone who has worked in a veterinary hospital before, wants to learn, pays attention and is comfortable receiving direction and feedback. We're particularly interested in people who are: Comfortable working directly with dogs and cats of different sizes, personalities and medical conditions Calm and thoughtful around nervous, fearful or excited animals Reliable and ready to work when scheduled Able to stay organized when several things are happening at once Willing to clean, restock and help with routine hospital work without waiting for someone else to do it Careful about instructions and patient safety Comfortable asking questions when they aren't sure Kind to clients, coworkers and patients Able to work as part of a team rather than only focusing on their own assigned task Previous veterinary hospital, animal-care or veterinary-assistant experience is required. Attitude, reliability, good judgment and the ability to learn matter a great deal. This is a real veterinary assistant position We want candidates to understand the job before applying. You will absolutely spend time with animals. You will also spend time cleaning, standing, bending, lifting, restraining patients, moving around the hospital, stocking supplies and helping coworkers. Some patients will be happy to see you. Some will be frightened, painful, sick or difficult to handle. Some days are fun. Some days are messy. Occasionally they are emotionally hard. Our hospital is open Monday through Friday 8am until 7pm and Saturdays 9am until 3pm. This position would be a combination of shifts, some 8am to 4pm with some 11am to 7pm. If you work a Saturday, you have a day off during the week to offset it.
