Open availability required Monday through Thursday Position Overview Layfield Veterinary Services, a well-established mixed animal practice, is seeking a dependable, motivated individual to join our team as a full-time Veterinary Assistant / Customer Service Representative. Our hospital primarily serves small animal patients, with occasional mixed animal cases, including goats. This position is best suited for candidates with at least some prior veterinary, kennel, or animal care experience who are looking to further develop their skills in a supportive, team-oriented environment. The ideal candidate is compassionate, eager to learn, comfortable with both clinical and client service responsibilities, and willing to contribute to all aspects of daily hospital operations. Key Responsibilities Greet clients professionally and assist with appointment scheduling, patient check-in, and check-out processes Assist veterinarians and technical staff during examinations, treatments, and procedures Safely handle and restrain animals during diagnostic and treatment procedures Provide attentive patient care, including feeding, walking, monitoring, and caring for hospitalized animals Administer medications and assist with basic laboratory tasks as directed Maintain accurate medical records and update patient information Support kennel operations and daily hospital sanitation Clean and maintain exam rooms, treatment areas, kennels, equipment, and common areas Perform routine facility upkeep, including laundry, stocking supplies, and general maintenance duties Communicate effectively and compassionately with clients regarding patient care and general pet wellness Cross-train to support both clinical and front desk operations as needed Qualifications Demonstrated dependability and strong attendance record Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and grow professionally Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment Strong communication and customer service skills Comfortable performing both clinical duties and physically demanding tasks, including cleaning and facility maintenance Professional demeanor with a positive and respectful attitude Previous veterinary assistant, kennel, boarding, animal shelter, grooming, farm animal, or veterinary clinic experience strongly preferred Candidates with veterinary assistant coursework, vocational training, or enrollment in an animal science/veterinary program are encouraged to apply Working knowledge of basic animal handling and restraint preferred Interest in animal care, animal husbandry, and veterinary medicine strongly preferred Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate is someone who already has some experience working around animals in a veterinary, kennel, boarding, grooming, shelter, or farm setting and is looking to continue building their knowledge and skills within the veterinary field. They take pride in their work, demonstrate initiative without constant supervision, and understand the importance of both patient care and maintaining a clean, organized hospital environment. They are adaptable, dependable, and willing to assist wherever needed—whether in a clinical setting, at the front desk, or with daily facility upkeep. A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and genuine compassion for animals and their owners are essential for success in this role.
