Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is representing a large dairy operation in Michigan who is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Breeder / Assistant Herdsman to support the dairy's reproduction and herd health programs. This position is primarily focused on reproductive management, with an average of approximately 100 cows bred per week, while also assisting with day-to-day herd responsibilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for administering synchronization and reproduction protocols, performing artificial insemination on cows and heifers, and maintaining accurate breeding records using herd management software. This individual will work closely with the Herd Manager and veterinarian to monitor reproductive performance, evaluate breeding results, and ensure established protocols are consistently followed. In addition to reproduction duties, the Breeder / Assistant Herdsman will assist with fresh cow monitoring, herd health checks, administering treatments, and supporting special needs or hospital barn activities as needed. Responsibilities may include identifying and treating sick animals, assisting with calvings, monitoring transition cows, and ensuring timely follow-up on health concerns. The position requires strong attention to detail, excellent observation skills, and the ability to recognize issues early and take appropriate action. Candidates should be comfortable working independently while collaborating with management and other employees to achieve herd performance goals.

  • Prior experience with artificial insemination (A.I.) breeding required
  • Strong understanding of dairy reproduction programs, including heat detection, synchronization protocols, and hormone administration
  • Proven ability to accurately breed high volumes of cows while maintaining strong conception rates
  • Experience using herd management software for breeding records, treatment documentation, and performance tracking
  • Strong herd health knowledge, including fresh cow monitoring, treatment protocols, and disease identification
  • Experience working with special needs, hospital, and fresh cow groups preferred
  • Strong animal handling skills with a calm, patient approach to working with cattle
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and follow established protocols with attention to detail
  • Spanish-speaking ability preferred
