Job Description
Mixed Animal Veterinary Assistant The Mixed Animal Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing high-quality medical care to both companion animals and livestock. This position involves patient care, laboratory procedures, facility maintenance, inventory management, and assistance with herd health operations in a fast-paced mixed animal practice. Essential Duties and Responsibilities-Clinical Support Prepare examination rooms, treatment areas, and surgical spaces for patient care. Clean, disinfect, and maintain work areas, equipment, and treatment facilities. Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and procedures. Collect, label, process, and prepare blood, urine, fecal, and other diagnostic samples. Perform and document in-house laboratory tests according to established protocols. Administer prescribed medications, fluids, and treatments under veterinary supervision. Change bandages and assist with wound management. Provide intensive nursing care for hospitalized and critical patients. Monitor recovering patients and report changes in condition to the veterinary team. Maintain accurate medical records and treatment logs. Animal Handling and Patient Care Safely restrain companion animals and livestock for examinations and procedures. Monitor animal behavior, comfort, and well-being during hospitalization and treatment. Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and client communication as directed. Herd Health and Livestock Services Safely handle and restrain cattle and other livestock during herd health visits and processing. Operate hydraulic chutes and other livestock handling equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Assist with vaccinations, reproductive examinations, identification procedures, and other herd health services. Support veterinarians during on-farm calls and livestock processing events. Inventory and Facility Management Monitor and maintain inventory of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, laboratory materials, and equipment. Receive, stock, and organize inventory shipments. Notify supervisors of low-stock items and assist with ordering supplies. Ensure treatment areas, vehicles, and equipment are clean, organized, and fully stocked. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous veterinary, animal care, agricultural, or livestock handling experience preferred. Knowledge of animal restraint techniques and basic veterinary procedures preferred. Ability to work safely around large animals and livestock handling equipment. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow instructions. Valid driver's license preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and more with assistance. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to safely work around animals of various sizes and temperaments. Willingness to participate in emergency, after-hours, and weekend care as needed. Work Environment This position involves work in a veterinary clinic, laboratory, hospital setting, and on farms or ranches. Exposure to animal-related hazards, biological materials, cleaning chemicals, and varying environmental conditions is expected.
