A Veterinary Assistant assists with animals under veterinary care or in laboratories. Feeds animals, cleans cages, and administers medical treatment under the supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary technician. Works in a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, or laboratory.

Responsibilities include:
Assist the veterinarian with surgical, medical, and dental procedures Restrain animals for anesthetic induction and surgical preparation Help with surgical preparation, including field clipping and sterile prep Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients Clean, wrap, and sterilize surgical instruments Disinfect kennels, carriers, and equipment Communicate in an effective and professional manner Maintain accurate medical records Fill prescriptions and follow Board of Pharmacy (BOP) protocols Administer medications as directed Assist with diagnostic testing Qualifications include: Ability to follow written and verbal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment Excellent client service and communication skills Proficiency in proper animal handling and restraint techniques Ability to work independently as well as with a team Flexibility and the ability to remain calm under pressure Adaptability and a strong willingness to learn Capability to perform other duties as assigned Experience in an animal shelter or clinic environment preferred Knowledge of basic veterinary medical concepts preferred Must be able to: Work comfortably with cats, dogs, and small animals Lift and move up to 50 pounds unassisted, and 50+ pounds with assistance Perform physical tasks like frequent bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, and stooping Stand and walk continuously during an entire shift Handle tame, stray, or feral pets safely Work around pet dander, dust, and other allergens without issue Demonstrate strong data entry skills and maintain accurate medical records Work independently with minimal supervision as a self-motivated team member Adhere strictly to the Fredericksburg SPCA's policies and philosophies
Working Conditions:
Indoors in a high noise, air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors, exposed to weather conditions on shelter grounds, use of SPCA animal care and transportation equipment, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, telephones, power washers, industrial laundry machines, and cleaning supplies Dress code: All clinic employees are required to wear full-set scrubs and closed toed shoes Compensation & benefits: This is a part-time, non-exempt position in which the employee will be scheduled a minimum of 14 hours per week.
Starting pay rate:
$14-18/hour, commensurate with experience.
Schedule:
Immediate schedule would be Tuesday & Wednesday 9am-5:00pm with the availability to add one Saturday per month (9am-2pm) starting in October. Potential for additional hours as we continue to grow our clinic's veterinarian staffed hours.
