  • Full-time Summary/Objective The Veterinary Assistant (VA) at Kindness Animal Hospital assist the veterinarian and CVTs with office visits, patient care, and interact with and educate clients.
The Veterinary Assistant welcomes pet owners in a comfortable, safe and sanitary environment. Essential Functions Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 1. Maintains a positive, cooperative relationships with other employees and display tact and respect with team members even when busy or hectic. 2. Provides compassionate care for pets. 3. Feels and expresses a genuine liking for animals and their owners and for working in an animal care field. 4. Assist the veterinarian and CVTs in patient care and medical treatments including but not limited to: medication administration, vaccine administration, acquiring laboratory samples, processing in-house and reference lab samples, anesthesia monitoring, dental prophy, surgical preparation, hospitalized patient care, critical/emergency care and triage. 5. Check in clients, take medical history, and obtain patient vital signs. 6. Fill prescriptions. 7. Discharge patients. 8. Enlighten and educate pet owners on treatment, surgical procedures and medication for their pets, 9. Assist in cleaning the hospital. 10. Answer phones and make appointments as needed. 11. Relay appropriate information to/from clients to DVM, CVTs, and/or management. 12. Maintain proper documentation in the electronic medical record. 13. Other duties as assigned. Competencies 1. Client/Patient Focus. 2. Be able to handle multiple unrelated tasks simultaneously while working in a busy environment. 3. Communication and mathematical Proficiency. 4. Teamwork Orientation. 5. Must be able to read, speak and write in English. Supervisory Responsibility This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment This job operates in a professional clinic environment, so professional appearance is required at all times. This role routinely requires work in front and back of hospital, high level of client interaction, exposure to x-rays and anesthetic gases with proper protective measures. Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and possible hazardous materials. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work on your feet for the majority of your shift. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands, and reach with hands and arms. Work requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to write legibly. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work This is a fulltime position. Shifts and hours of work are Monday through Friday, with an occasional Saturday. You must be able to work a variety of shifts, including weekends. VAs are required to be at work when scheduled and on time. Required Education and Experience 1. High School Diploma or GED required; advanced coursework preferred. 2. At least one year of Veterinary Assistant experience is preferred. 3. Basic communication and mathematical skills are essential skills. 4. Basic computer literacy skills. Duties, responsibilities and activities may change at any time with or without notice.
