ANIMAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I

Birmingham General Responsibilities :
This position is part of UAB's Animal Resources Program and provides hands-on experience in laboratory animal care and facility operations. The successful candidate will receive training in animal husbandry, animal health observation, sanitation procedures, regulatory compliance, and safe operation of animal care equipment. This is an entry-level opportunity for individuals interested in animal care, research support, or laboratory animal science. The position offers professional development, training toward AALAS certification, and opportunities for career progression within the Animal Resources Program. Work is performed onsite in a research animal facility and may include weekend and holiday coverage to ensure continuity of animal care.
Key Duties & Responsibilities :
1. Provide daily husbandry care for laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, monitoring health status, and maintaining appropriate environmental conditions. 2. Clean, sanitize, and maintain animal housing areas, cages, equipment, and facility support spaces in accordance with established safety and regulatory requirements. 3. Observe animal health and behavior, identify abnormalities, and report concerns to supervisory or veterinary personnel. 4. Record animal care activities, health observations, sanitation activities, and other required documentation accurately and timely. 5. Operate and maintain cage washers, autoclaves, and other animal care equipment to support facility operations and compliance standards. 6. Complete required training and follow institutional, regulatory, and animal welfare protocols to ensure safe and effective performance of assigned responsibilities. 7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Hourly Pay Range :
$15.00 - $22.75
Qualifications Minimum Requirements :
High School diploma or GED required. Work experience may NOT be substituted for education.
