ARISE is a 24-hour veterinary emergency and critical care (AVECCC) and specialty hospital in Queen Creek, AZ. We have the most skilled doctors in the state and provide significantly complex treatments in the western US. The teams in this department work closely with surgeons, oncologists, internists, radiologists, and a critical care team to provide the highest quality care to our patients. Job Purpose:
The purpose of the Veterinary Technician is to provide high quality medical support and nursing care to companion animal patients. The technician is routinely entrusted with patient assessments/triage, anesthesia, procedures, drug doses, and treatments. The technician will be responsible for patient care, patient follow-up, and maintenance of Oncology department patient records. The technician should enjoy working with diverse people and animals and be friendly and flexible in the face of varying expectations from clients and co-workers. The technician must share a firm belief in the quality of care we provide and communicate this sense of assurance to clients.
Overall Responsibility:
Oncology technicians possess excellent technical skills and a strong knowledge of oncology and chemotherapy procedures. AESC's doctors and technicians challenge themselves to stay current in their field and practice leading edge veterinary medicine. The ARISE team works well together in a highly collaborative manner, yet also allows room for autonomy and advancement.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Facilitate the doctor's daily schedule. Prepare exam room for each visit, including any necessary medications and supplies Retrieve patient charts from client services in order of appointment time or doctor request. Greet clients, obtain patients current body weight, reason for visit and brief history. Obtain other vitals and labwork as needed.
Patient workup:
including x-ray, blood work or other diagnostics Preform or assist CT scans as needed (training can and will be provided if needed)
Anesthesia:
induction, maintenance, monitoring and recovery when needed, especially for CT Appropriately handle chemotherapy medications Place "clean stick" IV catheter for administration of vesicant chemotherapy drugs Administer chemotherapy treatments as needed Cleaning and maintenance of equipment in the oncology ward as well as other areas of the hospital as needed Other duties as needed Administrative Duties Log controlled drugs Know how to use the inventory module in our veterinary practice‐management software Restock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area Follow OSHA requirements Follow practice's health and safety protocols Be proficient in using our veterinary practice‐management software (EzyVet, SmartFlow, Timeless) Assist Client Administrators as necessary Attending staff and individual meetings as scheduled Client Services Answer incoming phone calls; respond with appropriate information; encourage patient exam/evaluation Greet incoming clients/patients; facilitate medical record paperwork/computer entry Create estimates for services as requested by the doctor Audit invoices daily to ensure charges are accurate and update owners with current charges Admit/discharge patients: ensure patients are ready for discharge, including discharge paperwork, medications to go home, and belongings collected Collaborate with pDVMs Teamwork Participates in a positive manner in all group sizes. Refrains from participating in gossip‐leads by example. Supports team members by assisting other areas, is receptive to feedback and suggestions. Engages in active problem‐solving vs. Problem‐identifying. Proactive thinking. Willingness to be flexible and take on additional responsibilities as needed Makes suggestions related to client/patient service improvements and hospital efficiency. Educational Requirement High School diploma or equivalent required. Knowledge/Skills At least 1 year of animal experience is preferred. At least one year of Oncology experience is preferred. Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) license preferred Minimum of 2 years of technical experience Experience equivalent to job duties and responsibilities Excellent veterinary nursing and technical skills Excellent communication skills - written and verbal Strong computer skills Strong ability to multi‐task, delegate and oversee daily workflow Strong working knowledge of emergency veterinary medicine Strong work ethic and professionalism Good attendance. Handles stress well and keeps a positive attitude. Excels at conflict resolution and superb at problem solving. Physical Able to properly restrain dog and cat patients for veterinary care and procedures Able to stand, sit, bend, restrain, squat for extended periods of time Able to function within a busy, stressful work environment in a mature, professional manner Able to lift 60 lbs. in a safe manner Able to type, write and verbally converse Able to work the posted schedule Anticipated Schedule Oncology technicians will likely work four 10 hour shifts during the weekdays. Start dates will be staggered depending on availability for training.
