Our programs are rooted in the human-animal bond and include Rescue & Adoption, a 90-day Temporary Care Program, a Pet Food Bank, a First Responder Program, and partnerships with domestic violence shelters. Our home-like shelter cares for approximately 80 pets onsite, with an additional 150 pets in foster homes. A genuine love for animals is essential—your compassion should show in everything you do. Overview Animal Care Technicians (ACTs) are essential to our mission and culture. Working in partnership with the medical and behavior teams, ACTs provide consistent, compassionate care to ensure each animal's needs are understood and met throughout their time with us, supporting their journey to loving homes. ACTs maintain clean, safe, and welcoming animal care environments. We value teamwork, respect, inclusion, and a shared commitment to high-quality care and positive interactions with people. This role requires strong attention to detail, sound decision-making, the ability to work independently, and positive, respectfulcommunication with team members, volunteers, and the public. Full-time position is about 35 hours per week. Part-time positions are 14 - 28 hours depending on animal care needs. Essential Duties & Primary Job Functions Follow all written shelter procedures, safety guidelines, and operational protocols Clean and disinfect kennels, suites, free-roaming cat rooms, litterboxes, yards, equipment, and other areas of the facility where animals are living Provide food and fresh water to animals according to established feeding schedules, guidelines, and protocols Exercise dogs and provide regular out-of-kennel potty breaks Provide behavioral and environmental enrichment to support animals' physical and emotional well-being Safely handle dogs and cats of varying breeds, sizes, weights, temperaments, and behavioral and medical needs Observe animals daily and monitor for signs of illness, disease, injury, stress, or unusual behavior Accurately document observations and promptly report concerns to the correct department. Open and unlock the facility at the start of the day and/or close and secure the facility at the end of the day Qualifications & Proficiencies The ideal candidate will possess a combination of animal care experience, professionalism, and customer service skills.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum 6 months of experience working or volunteering in a shelter, rescue, veterinary clinic, boarding facility, grooming facility, or similar professional animal care environment Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols consistently Confidence and ability to safely handle dogs and cats of varying sizes, weights, temperaments, and behavioral and medical needs Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability, genuine interest, and commitment to interact positively and respectfully with the public, foster families, volunteers, and other team members Ability to remain calm, professional, and composed in stressful or emotionally charged situations Reliability, maturity, sound judgment , and a professional personal appearance Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and adapt to changing needs Passion for animal care across all life stages, from bottle babies to senior pets Physical Requirements & Work Environment The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time Frequent use of hands and arms for lifting, reaching, cleaning, and animal handling Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively in a shelter environment Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds Ability to handle, guide, and walk dogs weighing up to 100 pounds Why You'll Love This Role This is meaningful, hands-on work where your care makes a real difference every day.
