Job Summary Under general supervision, provide animal health technician support to the following programmatic areas: CEH teaching and research herd, the UC Davis Equine Rehabilitation program and the Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) Quarantine Program. Experience safely driving truck and horse trailer. Extensive experience handling, catching, restraining horses of all ages, sexes and behaviors, as well as training experience in introducing horses to new environments and activities. Skills to communicate clearly, effectively and professionally both orally and in writing, including the ability to interpret and understand department and university practices and operating procedures, discharge instructions, manuals, safety regulations, directives and other work-related communications. Computer skills to maintain electronic medical records, email daily updates, manage electronic calendars, etc. Ability to recognize sick and/or injured horses, check vital signs, perform daily medical treatments, draw blood, give injections, bandage limbs and wounds, administer prescribed medications and other paraveterinary tasks. Preferred Qualifications Experience in performing veterinarian-directed rehabilitation on horses, including the use of an underwater treadmill, equicizer, controlled lunging, equi-therapy bands, etc. Experience operating a centrifuge. Skill in both physical and chemical restraint methods for large animals, including the use of nose twitch, restraint stocks, breeding hobbles, and experience working with sedated horses.
