Job Description

Overview Animal Care Management / Experienced Vet Assistant — Part-Time Thyra's Sanctuary, a nonprofit lifelong home for cats, parrots, and dogs near Celebration/Disney, seeks a dependable, experienced animal-care professional. This hands-on leadership role is generally Monday-Friday, 8 AM-Noon, with occasional weekend coverage. Duties include administering medications (including insulin), monitoring animal health, cleaning and daily care, grooming/nail trims, vet visits, and helping supervise, schedule, and hire part-time staff. Veterinary assistant/technician, shelter-management, or comparable medical animal-care experience required. Applicants should be organized, compassionate, physically able to perform animal-care duties, live nearby, have reliable transportation and references, and pass a background check. Prefer applicants who live within a reasonable commute time of Disney/Celebration area Our animals stay with us for life—we need someone who wants to be a steady part of their care. Responsibilities Provide daily animal husbandry including feeding, cleaning rooms/enclosures, and monitoring overall health and behavior of animals. Administer medications as indicated on Medication Charts. Provide grooming and nail trims as needed. Assist with vet trips Skills Previous kennel experience or animal handling background with dogs, cats, and birds. Veterinary experience (vet tech, vet assistant, or shelter work) required. Knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, behavior, and welfare practices. Experience in feline medication administration and performing glucose checks required. Strong record keeping skills for documenting treatments, observations, and meds. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers about pet care needs and behavioral concerns. Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail. Knowledge of cleaning products that are safe for cats and birds.
