The Emergency and ICU Veterinary Technician provides high-quality, compassionate nursing care to patients presenting for urgent, emergent, and critical medical conditions. Working closely with veterinarians and the emergency care team, this position assists with patient triage, stabilization, diagnostics, treatments, procedures, anesthesia, monitoring, and ongoing patient care. Key Responsibilities Assist with rapid triage and initial assessment of emergency patients. Obtain and document patient history, vital signs, pain scores, and other pertinent clinical information. Recognize signs of patient deterioration and immediately communicate significant changes to the veterinarian. Assist with stabilization of critically ill or injured patients. Place and maintain intravenous catheters and administer medications and fluids as directed. Perform venipuncture and collect blood, urine, fecal, and other diagnostic samples. Perform and assist with diagnostic testing, including laboratory testing, radiographs, ultrasound, ECG, and other emergency diagnostics. Monitor patients throughout treatment, sedation, anesthesia, and recovery. Assist with emergency procedures, including CPR, wound management, catheter placement, oxygen therapy, and other lifesaving interventions. Prepare patients for surgery and assist the surgical team when emergency procedures are required. Administer medications, fluid therapy, blood products, and other treatments according to veterinary orders. Monitor and maintain IV fluids, infusion pumps, oxygen therapy, urinary catheters, drains, feeding tubes, and other medical equipment. Provide appropriate pain management, nursing care, hygiene, nutrition, and patient comfort. Maintain accurate and thorough medical records and treatment sheets. Communicate patient status and treatment plans effectively during shift changes and patient handoffs. Maintain clean, organized, stocked, and sanitary treatment and emergency areas. Properly clean, disinfect, and prepare equipment and treatment areas according to hospital protocols. Safely handle and restrain patients, including fearful, painful, fractious, or aggressive animals. Communicate professionally and compassionately with pet owners during stressful and emotional situations. Maintain knowledge of emergency protocols, hospital procedures, and current veterinary nursing practices. Assist other departments and team members as needed to ensure efficient patient flow and high-quality care. Experience Previous hands-on animal handling skills in a veterinary setting preferred Experience with animal physiology, anatomy, and veterinary terminology to support clinical tasks confidently Background in veterinary critical care or emergency medicine is highly desirable Laboratory experience including phlebotomy, diagnostic radiology, and specimen processing is a plus Demonstrated ability to operate medical equipment such as anesthesia machines, radiography units, and IV catheters Join us in making a difference in the lives of animals while advancing your career!
