Opportunity Job Summary:
The Animal Care Technician provides husbandry and care to laboratory animals, maintains animal inventory records and Animal Husbandry and Room Maintenance Records and performs facility sanitation in DLAM's Animal Facilities. This person is required to complete assigned work schedules with little to no supervision. The technician should be able to work independently and make correct decisions in their daily routine. The position requires weekend and holiday work hours. The position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalency degree. A minimum of two years of animal care experience. ALAT certification preferred.
Job Duties:
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate animal care for his/her assigned responsibilities. With little to no supervision, follow assigned schedules for husbandry, care and housing of laboratory animals. Technician responsible for feeding, watering, and cleaning the cage of their assigned animals. Reports all animal heath or behavioral problems to the appropriate staff. Maintains animal inventory records and Animal Husbandry and Room Maintenance Records for each assigned room. Able to cover and work in all/most areas in animal facility. Reports all facility and environmental issues to the Director. Provide guidance and on the job training to new animal technicians. Provide assistance with receiving and processing incoming animals and supplies Sanitizes and maintains the animal research facility equipment. Operates cage-wash, autoclave, and other animal facility related equipment. Assembles and prepares caging supplies for use in the animal facility. Performs euthanasia on small laboratory animals. Participates in technician meetings as scheduled by supervisory staff. Participates in continuing education training programs throughout employment as requested May be trained to provide specialized technical assistance to the DLAM Veterinary Staff and investigator staff. Required to work weekend and holidays. Occasional overtime work is also required to cover work due to absences of other animal care technicians. Required to comply and follow DLAM and
NU-IACUC
policies and procedures. Performs all other duties necessary for the proper functioning of the animal facility as assigned by the supervisory staff.
