Job Description

The Kalamazoo Humane Society is looking for a full-time or part time veterinary technician that is compassionate about helping animals and people, motivated to make a difference in the community, and committed to quality patient care for all. Our state-of-the-art, modern veterinary facility makes KHS one of the best-equipped veterinary clinics in southwest Michigan, allowing our veterinary team to offer full-scale wellness and surgical services. We have the equipment, the building, and the support staff; all that is missing is YOU!
VETERINARY SUPPORT
Provide veterinary nursing care, veterinary technical support, and surgical assistance according to current standards of veterinary practice in the United States, including but not limited to: fear-free patient handling, patient triage, anesthesia, placement and maintenance of sterile intravenous catheters, calculation of drug doses, low-stress administration of pharmaceuticals, assistance to the Veterinarian in surgical procedures, maintenance and preparation of sterile surgical instruments, provision of emergency medical support such as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, obtaining diagnostic samples from patients, and operation of clinical laboratory and radiographic equipment. Provide follow-up support as needed and appropriate for patients with chronic conditions, medical or surgical complications, or convalescent periods. Collaborate with, and support, Veterinarians and veterinary support staff in the care of patients. Maintain detailed, accurate, and legally compliant patient medical records and controlled substance logs. Provide a high standard of patient and client care with respect for the limited resources of a charity organization. Provide input as requested by the Medical Director for development and implementation of clinic protocols and staff training. Work with the Medical Director in the development and implementation of a full-service veterinary medical clinic and veterinary outreach services in support of Access to Care objectives.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Licensed Veterinary Technician certificate (or equivalent from another country) or currently enrolled in an accredited veterinary medical technology program Valid license to practice as an LVT in the State of Michigan Valid license to handle controlled substances in the State of Michigan Ability to provide excellent customer service, working cooperatively and patiently with animals and clients. Excellent team player, with ability to lead by example and work cooperatively as part of the KHS team. Computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Excel, and to allow rapid learning of clinical software. Willingness and aptitude to learn quickly, and to respond professionally to constructive criticism. Candidate must be highly motivated and take initiative as appropriate. No history of animal abuse or neglect
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) to five (5) years' experience working as an LVT or veterinary assistant in a veterinary clinic, veterinary hospital, and/or animal shelter or control facility Training in low-stress ("fear-free") animal handling.
