POSITION SUMMARY
The Registered Veterinary Technician/assistant will assist the veterinarian in all aspects of veterinary care. This is a fast-paced environment which relies on good multi-tasking, prioritizing and client service skills. This role will also include working with clients extensively in all aspects (phone calls, appointment scheduling, check in/out) as well as client education. In addition to these general responsibilities you would also be scheduling and handling surgical procedures, maintaining surgical equipment and instruments. They will also be responsible for assisting the practice manager with inventory, compliance with all regulatory bodies and other tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Client communication
- phone/in person/email/texting.
Including scheduling of appointments, follow up calls, prescription refill requests, etc. Payment collection, create and discuss estimates Client education on preventative care, medications, husbandry/feeding, illnesses, discharge instructions, etc. Handling In room and drop off appointments including taking a history, review of previous medical records/preventative care, assisting DVM with patient handling, administration of treatments and collection of diagnostic samples. Review all treatment plans, medications, follow up appointments, etc with the client Data entry into Practice management software. Proper maintenance of medical records and client communications. Use of correct medical terminology and abbreviations. Identifying and triage of emergencies and CPR Animal husbandry, low stress restraint and handling, obtaining vitals, general patient care Filling prescriptions correctly and understanding the correct usage of common medications. Blood collection (jugular, cephalic and saphenous), urine collection and handling of specimens. Processing samples on in house lab equipment or send out to reference laboratories. Use and maintenance of Lab equipment
- including Idexx lab equipment, microscope, centrifuge, etc Proper set up and interpretation of fecal analysis, urinalysis, Snap Assays, ear/skin cytologies, blood smear preparation and skin scrapings.
Radiographs:
positioning/restraint/image capture, including sending to PACs and DVM Insight for review Drug & fluid calculations Catheter placement

drugs, SQ/IV fluids, oral/ophthalmic/aural/topical/inhalant medications, bandage placement Administration of oxygen therapy Isolation protocol Blood pressure/ECG monitoring Controlled drug logs/record keeping Re-stocking supplies, assisting with inventory Maintaining clean & sanitary conditions Housekeeping, kennel cleaning, general cleaning of the hospital Surgical responsibilities Participating with surgical team in all procedures Working with the team and clients to schedule all anesthetic procedures Admitting surgical patients for all anesthetic procedures including correct paperwork completion, client education and patient care. Calculation of medication dosages for surgery and understanding correct usage Administration of preoperative medications via IM, SQ or IV injections IV catheter placement, correct intubation and IV injection of anesthetic agents Set up/Prep for all surgical procedures including anesthesia machine and monitoring unit set up and testing, instrument and suture selection and set up Preparation of surgical fields and maintaining sterility Performing COHAT on patients including digital dental radiographs (no extractions to be performed
- only done by DVM) Maintenance and operation of all surgical equipment including anesthetic machine, autoclave and ultrasonic cleaner Entering patients' procedure charges into medical records/invoices and keeping accurate patient records including DEA drug logs.
Discharging surgical patients including educating clients on post op medications, dosages, expectations, procedure details, etc. Surgical pack preparation, cleaning, packing and sterilization Helping Practice Manager with inventory counts and monitoring the expiration dates and quantity of products. Receiving inventory products and matching the products to the invoices. Helping the Practice Manager keep the hospital AAHA and OSHA compliant Working under direct supervision of the Practice Manager to help maintain staff morale Assisting in creating and implementing SOPs and training materials/templates

SKILLS & ABILITIES
Certification Required Missouri RVT license-to be maintained in good standing at all times Fear Free Certification
- Level 1 achieved within 90 day introductory period and maintained at least at Level 1 annually Computer Skills Ability to understand and use a Windows based computer system and network.
Ability to type accurately and spell correctly. Ability to learn and correctly use practice management software. Other Requirements Ability to multi-task, prioritize, follow directions and learn new material in a highly physical environment. Ability to stand for the length of time to complete procedures, to sit, kneel and bend. Ability to lift at least 30 lbs. Ability to practice safe/proper practices with radiography, anesthesia, sterilization, isolation and potentially zoonotic animals. Training of new or lesser skilled staff as required by the supervisor.
