Full-Time, Hourly Position Summary The Urgent Care Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing high-quality care and technical support for urgent care patients in a fast-paced veterinary environment. This position works closely with veterinarians, fellow technicians, client service representatives, and pet owners to provide compassionate, efficient medical care to sick and injured animals requiring same-day treatment. Urgent Care Veterinary Technicians assist with patient triage, diagnostics, treatments, client communication, anesthesia support, hospitalization care, and check in/out. They play a critical role in ensuring excellent patient outcomes while maintaining a positive experience for clients and their pets. Job Relationships This position works closely with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, client service representatives, and clinic leadership. Frequent interaction with clients and their pets is required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented veterinary environment. Strong knowledge of animal handling, restraint, behavior, and low-stress patient care techniques. Excellent communication and customer service skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize patient care needs appropriately. Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology and common urgent care conditions. Ability to accurately document medical information and maintain detailed medical records. Ability to work independently while following established protocols and veterinarian direction. Commitment to the mission and goals of the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of veterinary technician experience preferred. Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT/LVT/RVT) preferred but not required. Experience in emergency, urgent care, or general practice medicine preferred. Must be at least 18 years old. Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted. Ability to stand, bend, and perform repetitive movements throughout an 8-10-hour shift. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPatient Care Triage incoming urgent care patients and accurately obtain patient histories. Safely restrain animals using low-stress handling techniques. Monitor patient condition and communicate changes to veterinarians promptly. Administer medications, fluids, and treatments as prescribed. Provide care for hospitalized and recovering patients. Assist with wound care, bandage changes, catheter placement, and emergency stabilization procedures. Perform nebulization and other supportive care treatments as directed. Diagnostics Collect diagnostic samples including blood, urine, feces, skin scrapings, and cytology samples. Perform in-house laboratory testing and accurately document results. Prepare and submit samples to outside laboratories as needed. Obtain high-quality radiographs and assist with diagnostic imaging procedures. Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure quality control protocols are followed. Procedures and Anesthesia Assist veterinarians with examinations and medical procedures. Prepare patients for sedation and anesthesia. Monitor anesthesia and recovery when applicable. Assist with minor surgical and urgent care procedures. Maintain accurate anesthesia and treatment records. Client Communication Assist clients with patient intake and discharge. Obtain accurate patient histories and document client concerns. Clearly communicate treatment plans, estimates, home-care instructions, and follow-up recommendations as directed by the veterinarian. Assist clients with payment processing, financing options, payment plans, and available financial assistance programs. Coordinate grant assistance and maintain appropriate documentation when applicable. Answer client inquiries in person and by phone while providing exceptional customer service. Provide compassionate support to clients during stressful medical situations. Maintain professionalism and confidentiality during all client interactions. Inventory and Facility Maintenance Ensure treatment, laboratory, and examination areas remain clean, organized, and fully stocked. Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs according to established procedures. Properly clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and equipment. Minimize waste and utilize resources responsibly. Medical Records Maintain accurate and timely patient records. Document treatments, diagnostics, medications, and patient observations thoroughly. Ensure all medical records comply with hospital policies and veterinary standards. General Expectations Maintain a high standard of patient care and professionalism. Arrive on time and prepared for scheduled shifts. Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities. Accept constructive feedback and implement changes as needed. Promote teamwork and cooperation among all clinic staff. Support the goals and mission of the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Perform other duties as assigned. Working Conditions Work is performed in a fast-paced veterinary urgent care environment. Employees may be exposed to animal bites, scratches, zoonotic diseases, unpleasant odors, bodily fluids, and cleaning chemicals. The position requires frequent standing, bending, lifting, and animal restraint. Emotional situations involving critically ill, injured, or euthanasia patients may occur.
