Job Description
Position Purpose The Lead Veterinary Technician serves as a clinical leader, mentor, and role model for the veterinary support staff. This position combines excellent technical skills with leadership responsibilities to ensure high standards of patient care, team performance, client service, and hospital efficiency. The Lead Veterinary Technician works closely with doctors and management to support daily operations, develop team members, maintain accountability, and promote a positive workplace culture. Primary Responsibilities Clinical Patient Care The Lead Veterinary Technician is expected to: Continue providing exceptional patient care and nursing support. Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnostics, treatments, surgeries, and procedures. Ensure patient safety, comfort, and proper monitoring. Maintain accurate and complete medical records. Ensure treatment plans and doctor orders are carried out correctly. Follow and enforce hospital protocols and standards of care. Serve as a resource for technical and medical questions from staff. Leadership and Team Development The Lead Veterinary Technician is expected to: Lead by example through professionalism, attitude, work ethic, and clinical performance. Set expectations for technician and assistant performance. Help create a positive, productive, and respectful work environment. Support teamwork and collaboration among all departments. Assist in building staff morale and promoting a culture of accountability. Encourage employees to perform at their highest level. Training and Mentorship The Lead Veterinary Technician is responsible for: Training new technicians and assistants. Assisting with onboarding and orientation of new employees. Providing ongoing coaching and mentorship. Identifying skill gaps and recommending additional training. Ensuring staff understand and follow hospital procedures and protocols. Helping team members improve technical, communication, and organizational skills. Quality Control and Standards The Lead Veterinary Technician will: Monitor the quality and consistency of patient care. Ensure hospital protocols are followed consistently. Identify errors, inefficiencies, or areas needing improvement. Address concerns promptly and professionally. Help implement new procedures and protocols when necessary. Assist management in maintaining high medical and operational standards. Team Accountability The Lead Veterinary Technician is expected to: Hold team members accountable for assigned responsibilities. Address performance concerns respectfully and professionally. Provide constructive feedback and coaching. Encourage problem-solving and professional growth. Document and communicate ongoing concerns to management when appropriate. Support hospital policies and expectations consistently. The Lead Technician is not responsible for hiring, firing, disciplinary action, wage decisions, or final personnel decisions unless specifically delegated by management. Communication The Lead Veterinary Technician must: Maintain open and professional communication with doctors, management, and staff. Communicate concerns, challenges, and opportunities for improvement. Help ensure information is shared accurately and efficiently. Act as a liaison between support staff and management when needed. Promote respectful and solution-focused communication throughout the hospital. Operational Oversight The Lead Veterinary Technician is expected to: Assist with daily workflow management. Help ensure adequate staffing and task distribution. Monitor efficiency and productivity within the treatment area. Assist with inventory management and supply needs. Ensure treatment, surgery, and patient care areas remain organized and functional. Help address workflow issues before they impact patient care or client service. Problem Solving and Initiative The Lead Veterinary Technician should: Identify challenges before they become larger problems. Take initiative to improve processes and workflow. Recommend solutions that benefit patients, clients, staff, and the hospital. Support positive change and continuous improvement. Assist management in achieving hospital goals. Hospital Cleanliness, Organization, and Facility Standards The Lead Veterinary Technician is responsible for helping maintain a clean, organized, safe, and professional hospital environment at all times. This includes monitoring daily cleanliness standards and ensuring that all team members are contributing to the upkeep of the facility.
Responsibilities include:
Ensuring all treatment, exam, surgery, laboratory, pharmacy, kennel, and common areas remain clean, organized, and fully functional throughout the day. Monitoring staff compliance with cleaning and sanitation protocols. Ensuring cages, runs, treatment tables, equipment, and workspaces are properly cleaned and disinfected according to hospital standards. Maintaining organized supplies, medications, and equipment to promote efficiency and patient safety. Ensuring hospital equipment is cleaned, maintained, and stored properly after use. Identifying areas that require attention and assigning cleaning or organizational tasks as needed. Assisting in creating and maintaining daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules. Ensuring clutter is minimized and work areas remain professional and presentable. Helping maintain OSHA, safety, and infection-control standards. Leading by example by participating in cleaning and organizational responsibilities alongside the team. Expectations The Lead Veterinary Technician is expected to routinely monitor all areas of the hospital and ensure they meet hospital standards for cleanliness, organization, safety, and professionalism. Cleanliness and organization are the responsibility of the entire team, and the Lead Technician is expected to help hold staff accountable to these standards while promoting a culture of pride in maintaining the hospital environment.
