Job Summary The Veterinary Diagnostic and Lab Technician is responsible for overseeing the efficiency, accuracy, and overall function of the hospital's diagnostic laboratory. This role ensures top-tier quality control, minimizes sample errors, manages in-house and send-out laboratory processes for both inpatients and outpatients, and works closely with the leadership team to streamline lab protocols. Additionally, this position acts as a vital support resource on the clinic floor, collaborating with Veterinary Technicians to collect samples, perform radiographs, and assist with various advanced diagnostics to optimize patient care and hospital workflow.
Key Responsibilities Laboratory Management & Quality Control Sample Processing:
Accurately run and analyze all in-house laboratory samples for both inpatient and outpatient cases in a timely manner.
Equipment Maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and strict quality control (QC) testing on all laboratory diagnostic equipment to ensure reliable results. Coordinate with service representatives to evaluate maintenance protocols that adhere to manufacturer recommendations.
Send-Out Laboratory Samples:
Oversee the proper handling, preparation, packaging, and tracking of all send-out laboratory samples, ensuring compliance with external laboratory protocols.
Process Optimization:
Proactively identify areas to minimize sample errors, troubleshoot equipment issues, and streamline lab protocols to improve overall diagnostic efficiency and function.
Clinical & Diagnostic Support Floor Assistance:
Collaborate actively with Veterinary Technicians on the treatment floor, stepping in to assist with sample collection (e.g., venipuncture, cystocentesis, and catheterization) as needed.
Diagnostic Imaging:
Accurately and safely obtain diagnostic-quality radiographs, ensuring proper patient positioning, restraint, and adherence to radiation safety protocols.
In-Hospital Diagnostics:
Provide hands-on assistance with any other diagnostic procedures performed within the hospital, ensuring the medical team has the support required for rapid patient assessment.
Qualifications Education and Experience Experience:
Minimum of 1 years of experience working in a veterinary hospital setting. Experience in an emergency, urgent care, or high-volume diagnostic laboratory setting is preferred. Technical Skills Proficient in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining veterinary laboratory analyzers (e.g.,Heska, or IDEXX systems). Strong manual laboratory skills, including preparing blood smears, running packed cell volumes (PCV/TS), and performing basic urinalysis/fecal evaluations and advanced in-house diagnostics. Proficient in veterinary radiographic positioning, digital imaging software, and radiation safety standards. Familiarity with Instinct and digital medical records system workflows.
