Toledo Humane Society, Northwest Ohio's largest open admission nonprofit animal shelter, is hiring for a full-time Registered Veterinary Technician position. We are expanding our programs and need the necessary support staff to help us grow. Hourly salary will vary with experience. Our medical team currently consists of four veterinarians, seven RVTs, and three veterinary assistants. We are a busy, fast-paced environment. Our facility has digital x-ray, dental x-ray, a dedicated dental station, and a twotable surgery suite. We are looking for a hard-working team player with a positive attitude. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
Demonstrate core values of organization in all actions and interactions, internal and external Provide exemplary customer service and facilitate good experiences for all clients and patients Maintain respectful and cooperative working relationships with coworkers Check patients in for surgery and prepare patient records, including calculating drug dosages Prepare surgery room, dental area, exam rooms, and equipment each day Sedate and prep animals for surgery, monitor anesthesia and recovery, enter surgical notes in clinic software Perform dental cleanings including full mouth radiographs Clean up of medical areas, including surgical packs and laundry Perform record-keeping related to surgical and medical procedures, including drug logs and electronic patient records Obtain detailed patient histories, summarize information for DVMs, and assist DVM in performing physical exams on patients Create and review estimates with clients Perform scheduled medical treatments of patients, including cleaning and nursing care of post-op patients, critical patients, and patients in isolation. Update DVM on status of patients, record progress in electronic records Collect medical samples as needed from patients, including blood, urine, fecals, skin scrapes, etc., read samples as needed and prepare samples to send to outside labs Fill prescriptions for patients Perform medical callbacks and communicate information with DVM as needed Help monitor inventory of surgical and medical supplies, restock supplies as consumed Provide input on medical policies, procedures, and treatment protocols as needed Assist in training and mentoring staff and volunteers/externs as needed Understand the multiple functions of the organization, including all THS programs Maintain current knowledge through continuing education Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Registered veterinary technician degree from accredited school, current license to practice in Ohio Knowledge of restraint, handling techniques, general animal safety practices, animal body language Follow established protocols for limiting spread of disease between surgical or medical patients Ability to work independently and in a team, able to professionally and calmly cope with stressful and emotional situations, able to balance multiple priorities and deadlines Comfortable interacting with the general public and ability to communicate professionally both orally and in writing Proficient use of computer including Microsoft Office programs, email, Internet and clinic software. Passion for THS mission, for caring of all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament or species. Requires flexible hours, may occasionally (but rarely) include working on weekends, evenings, and holidays
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50+ pounds assisted Ability to be comfortable working with cats, dogs, small mammals Ability to perform strenuous physical activity on a daily basis, including lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, bending Due to nature of veterinary medicine, may be exposed to deceased, ill, or fractious animals, zoonotic or other diseases, unpleasant noises, odors, or sights, extreme temperatures, irate people
