Job Description

Position Summary The Shelter Veterinary Technician supports the medical care and overall health of animals in Pet Helpers' shelter and foster programs. Working closely with the veterinarian and shelter leadership, this position provides daily treatments, preventive care, medical monitoring, surgical assistance, staff training, and accurate medical recordkeeping to ensure high standards of animal welfare. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Administer medications, treatments, vaccinations, and preventive care as directed by the veterinarian. Conduct daily medical rounds and monitor animal health, reporting concerns promptly. Assist with examinations, diagnostics, surgeries, and medical procedures, including sample collection, anesthesia support, and animal restraint. Maintain accurate medical records in PetPoint, Avimark, and other designated systems. Ensure animals remain current on vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and other routine medical care. Communicate medical needs and treatment plans to shelter staff and support adopter counseling when needed. Train staff on medication administration, animal handling, disease recognition, and medical protocols. Assist with intake evaluations, foster animal care, and coordination of outside veterinary appointments as needed. Monitor medical supply inventory and assist with ordering. Participate in program development, meetings, and other duties as assigned. Qualifications Veterinary Technician certification preferred; equivalent veterinary or shelter medicine experience considered. Knowledge of animal handling, disease prevention, shelter medicine, and veterinary procedures. Experience with medical recordkeeping and veterinary software systems preferred. Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills. Valid South Carolina driver's license required. Commitment to animal welfare and humane care practices. Working Conditions Full-time position working in both shelter and clinical environments. Frequent handling of animals of varying sizes and temperaments. Exposure to animal-related injuries, zoonotic diseases, cleaning chemicals, and moderate to high noise levels. Ability to lift, move, and safely restrain animals.
Pay:
$16.00 - $20.00 per hour
