Job Description

Care for animals in treatment, quarantine or temporary holding. Assist in routine and emergency exams, obtain samples for diagnostics, and administer medications.?? Acts as liaison between staff and veterinarian when necessary.? Performs medical inventory control and orders in conjunction with the Shelter Director.? Maintains medical records on every animal, ensuring they are complete and up-to-date. Maintains records of Veterinarian's instructions and dates vaccinations to be given. Determines when isolated animals can be available for adoption. Makes recommendations for improvements to shelter in regard to disease control. Monitors the shelter for signs of disease, and reports problems to appropriate personnel. Makes recommendations for and performs euthanasia in conjunction with the Shelter Director, when necessary. Administers medications and injections in conjunction with instructions or review by Shelter Director. Does fecals & urinalysis when required and has a de-worming regimen. Assist the Shelter Director within the limits dictated by SC Code Sections 40-1-70 and Section 120-9.Assists Shelter Director and/or Certified Euthanasia Technician with euthanasia. Assists with temperament testing Ability to assist facility employees including feeding, cleaning, and treating animals.? Duties will also include cleaning teeth; securing animals during treatment; shaving and preparing animals for treatment; administering medications; and performing lab tests. May be required to attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attend educational venues as recommended/approved. Ability to interact with the public, assist with answering telephones inquires, screening applicants for animal adoption, or educating visitors on neutering and other animal health issues as assigned. Ability to handle the public professionally and maintain a calm and professional demeanor while enforcing the county requirements regarding animal care. Ability to handle unpleasant, as well as physically and emotionally demanding work. May be required to assist with cleaning and disinfecting of cages and runs. May be required to assist with removing all food dishes and wash, rinsing all drains to assure all feces and disinfectant is removed, and preparing beds, refill waters. Carries out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County, and City laws and ordinances. Regular attendance is essential and necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities required for this job. 6 months to 1 year of advanced study or training beyond high school equivalency, with no experience required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
