Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Provide technical and medical support of animals; maintain facility, equipment, records and supplies. Assist with surgeries and treatment. Perform lab tests and communicate medical information to other staff and at times, the public. Routinely check the functionality of medical/lab equipment. Oversee the care of the animals in the clinic; maintain a safe and sterile environment. Update and enter information into medical records. This role does not have direct or indirect reports. This position will report to the Clinic Supervisor
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Prepare surgical patients for anesthesia, including physical exams, pre-medication, and catheter placement.
  • Performing blood draws, administering vaccinations, medications, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed surgical and anesthetic records in shelter medical software.
  • Assist in surgery (Spay/Neuter, Dentals, Amputations, Emergency, Etc.)
  • Induce and monitor anesthesia using injectable and inhalant protocols for high-volume surgical procedures.
  • Recover animals post-operatively and assess recovery quality, intervening as needed.
  • Discharge all public animals and counsel owners on post-operation instructions.
  • Assist with surgical inventory management and daily surgical area cleaning and restocking.
  • Wash, dry, and fold all laundry throughout the day.
  • Sterilize surgical instruments, maintain surgical packs, and ensure readiness of surgical suite.
  • Ability to handle the public professionally and maintain a calm demeanor while enforcing county regulations regarding animal care

  • Must be proficient with basic computer applications
  • Must be able to complete tasks stated above without extensive training
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse range of people and personalities
  • Supports a non-judgmental approach to people, adopters, and the community
  • Ability to be adaptive and responsive to evolving priorities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Flexibility to work as needed, including some weekends.
  • Working knowledge of animal restraint and care technique
  • Ability to handle unpleasant, as well as physically and emotionally demanding work
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, and hazards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum 2 year working in the veterinary medicine field with surgery specific knowledge and skills
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Responds in a timely manner with appropriate and accurate information
LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT, CVT, or RVT) or eligible for certification within 12 months)
  • Familiarity of Human Animal Support Services (HASS) values and elements.
  • Minimum 3 years of previous work in the veterinary medicine industry with surgery specific knowledge and skills
  • Certified in Humane Euthanasia, or ability to receive certification
  • Highly developed emotional intelligence, ethical decision making, and capacity to navigate multiple interests to achieve positive outcomes
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with teammates, volunteers and public
  • All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued in the state of South Carolina.
Pay:
$41,828.00 per year
