Job Description

As a Teaching Assistant for the Summer Institute for the Gifted Program, you will assist the classroom Instructor in student/classroom supervision, mentoring, and coaching students through their social and academic interactions daily. SIG Teaching Assistants role model for our students, a friendly, helpful, and positive attitude, while demonstrating a commitment to curiosity and learning. UC Berkeley Programs Summer Discovery's UC Berkeley program offers high school students an immersive, academy-style learning experience that blends hands-on activities, group projects, and real-world applications, allowing them to come out of the program with a solid understanding and knowledge base that will serve them well in college and beyond. From the highly selective M.E.T. Innovation Academy run by UC Berkeley's College of Engineering and Haas Business School, to Summer Discovery programs in Psychiatry and Neuroscience, Research in Medicine, or Engineering and Robotics, students explore fields that ignite their passions and build a foundation for future careers. The Emergency Medicine and Health Sciences Academy, for example, offers students a direct, tactile opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the daily responsibilities of emergency healthcare professionals, including dissections and site visits to local hospitals. All courses are taught by passionate and accredited instructors in their field of study with students benefiting from exposure to eminent professors and researchers and a culture driven by technology and innovation and the influence of industry leaders from the Bay Area's dynamic start-ups and corporate giants. Summer Discovery students at UC Berkeley have the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the university's academic prestige with unparalleled access to labs, maker spaces, and other resources. At the conclusion of the program, students receive a resumé-boosting Certificate of Completion and a letter of recognition for each course taken. This position will work Monday-Friday daily, with hours between 8:00am
  • 4:30pm, with some flexibility required.
IMPORTANT DATES

Session One Classes Begin:
June 29

Session Two:
July 13
  • July 24.
The ideal candidate will be available for both sessions.
Location:
UC Berkeley
  • must be able to commute to campus daily, housing not provided. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supports Teacher with instruction in small groups, differentiation needs, activity set-up, culminating project student support, leading Brain Break activities, classroom management, and supports a safe classroom experience.
  • Serves as a positive role model for the students and staff in the program. Use good judgment in decision making, problem-solving, and mentoring children/young adults.
  • Seeks guidance and assistance from SIG staff regarding student related concerns and follows through on communication as needed.
  • Supervises and actively participates in lunch and recreation hour activities and supports the special programs and activities offered to residential students each afternoon.
  • Assists with the opening day program duties, student registration, and orientation participates in the Final Program Ceremony and closing day procedures including helping Teacher with student and program evaluations.
  • Responds to all emergencies and assists in the needs of the program as directed. Adheres to policies and procedures as outlined in applicable manuals and employee handbooks.
  • Additional duties as assigned. Qualifications
  • Must be at least 20 years old and eligible to work in the US
  • Working towards a degree in higher education , education or field of STEM preferred.
  • Work and supervisory experience with children and young adults (between ages 10-17)
  • Experience working with students in an academic, tutoring, mentoring, and/or recreational capacity
  • Housing is not provided; Teaching Assistant should live within a daily commutable distance and is responsible for own transportation
  • Availability to assist with up to two-3-week sessions Expected hours of Work / Travel
  • This role is required to be at the assigned campus during assigned course periods and days.
  • Attend required pre-program virtual training and one day, in-person on-campus orientation.
  • This role is expected to commute to and from program location daily, housing is not provided.
