Job Description

Service Position Summary Yosemite National Park preserves natural and cultural resources unimpaired for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Yosemite Wildlife Management Office strives to maintain safe visitor access and healthy wildlife populations in the park through campaigns of public education and wildlife management strategies with a focus on bear management. Yosemite National Park is seeking a motivated SCA member to assist park wildlife biologists in reducing human-wildlife conflicts by detecting and mitigating the availability of human food in campgrounds, parking lots, lodging facilities, and other park areas. The applicant will serve out of a busy field office in a team setting. The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country. This position is part of SCA's National Direct Opportunity Youth Service Initiative (OYSI). OYSI is a partnership between SCA, AmeriCorps, and The Corps Netclimate which engages youth ages 18-24 who are disconnected from school or work in hands-on conservation service that protect and restore public lands, waters, and recreation resources nationwide. The program provides job-skills training, support, and career pathways in environmental stewardship and infrastructure fields, while prioritizing placements for participants who meet opportunity-youth eligibility criteria Member Impact Members will make a meaningful, hands-on contribution to protecting wildlife and visitor safety in Yosemite National Park. Serving alongside park wildlife biologists, members help reduce human-wildlife conflicts by locating and mitigating human food sources in campgrounds, parking areas, lodging facilities, and other high-use park locations. Their efforts support the park's wildlife management strategies, particularly bear management, by helping prevent wildlife from becoming food-conditioned and promoting responsible food storage among visitors. Along the way, members gain practical field experience, develop skills in wildlife monitoring and public engagement, and learn directly from professional resource managers. This experience builds a strong foundation for careers in wildlife biology, conservation, and natural resource management while supporting Yosemite's mission to protect wildlife and natural resources for future generations. Schedule June 1, 2026 - August 22, 2026 Hours 40 hours/week Monday through Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Some nights and weekends may be required during training and for special activities. A minimum 30-minute lunch break is required each service day. Lunch periods do not count toward the required minimum service hours. Service Location Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Valley, CA AmeriCorps Service Term Minimum Hours Requirement 450 hours Essential Functions Assist with monitoring movements of bears using GPS and radio telemetry; assist in capture and relocation of bears and other wildlife Assist with negative conditioning of bears and other wildlife using various tactics Enter daily patrol data into a database. The position functions will comply with all AmeriCorps Prohibited Activity restrictions specified in the SCA AmeriCorps Member Service Agreement and SCA Corps Member Handbook. Marginal Functions Additional wildlife management duties may be required as necessary including participating in wilderness patrols focusing on educating hikers and backpackers about bears and proper food storage. AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements:
This position is part of a specialized SCA AmeriCorps program and if you are selected, you will be serving as an SCA AmeriCorps member. To be eligible for this position you must meet these basic
AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements:
. Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States; . Being at least 18 years or older; . Having a high school diploma or equivalent or actively working to complete; . Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check after acceptance of position, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks. Preferred Qualifications . Interest in pursuing a career in conservation or a related field is preferred. Commitment Required The program's term of service is a 12-week (450 hours) commitment that will last June 1 2026 - August 22, 2026. Members will serve 40 hours per week. Living Accommodations Housing will be provided in the form of a designated employee campsite (tents only) with other crew members. Tent and other camping equipment can be furnished upon request. Personal Vehicle Requirement Not required; Recommended for days off Compensation Amount of Living Allowance member will receive: $600/week Amount of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award being offered for successful completion of the member term of service: $1956.35 All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
