Immediately Job Description Infrastructure & Systems Engineer Department of Technology Full-Time, 12 months/year VRS-Eligible, Benefits-Eligible The Albemarle County Public Schools Department of Technology is actively recruiting an Infrastructure & Systems Engineer to join our team. The major focus of this work involves the engineering, installation, maintenance and administration of Wide Area Network and Local Area Network resources and complex division-wide systems for the School Division including, core intranetworking and internetworking equipment, multi-platform servers, wireless and telephony networking equipment, cross-platform applications, division-wide databases and Enterprise directory services. The Infrastructure & Systems Engineer performs hardware and software installation, technical troubleshooting, problem resolution, and training for Enterprise systems; serves as a technical leader for assigned high-level Enterprise engineering projects; and provides departmental oversight of division-wide networking infrastructure. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs the engineering & administrative work for multiple technical support teams; Serves as high-level technical engineering leader on complex projects for the County & School Division through all stages of research, development and implementation; Works closely with department staff to ensure interoperability and standardization of site-based, School Division & County-wide technical systems; Collaborates with department staff and members of other departments to engineer and integrate technology solutions for new or existing applications, and to provide consultation and support of division-wide information processing needs; Installs, configures and maintains critical systems and applications software necessary to support core Enterprise services including, but not limited to, administrative and instructional servers, LAN/WAN switching and routing equipment, wireless infrastructure components, VoIP equipment, directory services, client/server applications, e-mail services, web services, database back-end services, content filtering, enterprise wireless broadband, dark fiber infrastructure and other technical systems; Configures and maintains operating systems, network operating systems and internetworking operating systems critical to the operation of central and remote data centers; Engineers and manages all aspects of the School Division VoIP telephone network including, but not limited to, call-processing servers, voicemail servers, gateway and circuit termination equipment, 911 PS-ALI database, and coordinates service implementation from the local telephone company; Installs, configures and maintains multi-platform computer hardware and software, and cross-platform network-based applications; Functions as central systems and network administrator to maintain and control user databases and system security for Enterprise directories, services and system; Provides high-level technical troubleshooting and problem resolution for hardware, software, and core systems; Maintains regular backups of Enterprise servers and systems; Regularly performs hardware and software maintenance for Enterprise systems during evenings or weekends as necessary; Reviews Enterprise systems load statistics and status reports, and tunes systems for maximum operating efficiency; Maintains documentation of critical Enterprise systems, networks and operational information; Performs cost analysis for automation including justifications for additional hardware, software and networking infrastructure; Prepares reports and graphical presentations from collected data to provide administrators with information for data-driven decision making; Evaluates and tests emerging technologies, and makes recommendations for future integration; Evaluates and makes suggestions concerning department's standards which would facilitate improved operations; Conducts limited user training on hardware and software usage; Performs Quality Control checks on work of other staff; Provides status reports to supervisor and management; Participates in department's collaborative teamwork concept; Meets departmental and organizational deadlines; Performs various other activities as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Demonstrates computer logic abilities; knowledge of productivity software, workstation OS, server OS, networking equipment; knowledge of various client/server database application and network services; demonstrated abilities in oral and written communication skills; ability to work well with people. Should possess exceptional ability to work and perform under pressure; ability to work independently and self-motivated. Should exhibit strong leadership attitude in support of project, Department, School Division & County goals; and ability to lead others in a team environment.
NOTE:
Hardware and software knowledge is very important, particularly in but not limited to Apple Desktop and Server OS, Microsoft Desktop and Server OS , Microsoft SQL Server, Multiple Server Virtualization technologies, Network Virtualization, Dell & Cisco IOS, Cisco Telephony, Next Generation Firewalls, Data & Traffic Shaping/Filtering Technologies, Enterprise Data Storage, Security Monitoring Systems & hardware, Centralized Wireless Infrastructure, Audio/Video IP Streaming Technologies, Enterprise Wireless Broadband technologies, 3D & GIS modeling, Inside & Outside Plant Fiber Optic Infrastructure, Cloud Infrastructure Administration and Integration, PC/Android/Apple Mobile OS, and the Microsoft Office productivity suite.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Three years or more of related work experience as an Infrastructure & Systems Engineer, network engineer, systems engineer, support analyst, network administrator, technology instructor, programmer or programmer/analyst in a similar hardware and software environment, plus one of the following: 1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college/university with extensive class work in data processing and programming; or 2. Community college degree in Computer Science or Business; or, 3. Additional experience may be substituted for education.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS
Work is typically performed in an office, data center, classroom, or conference room. Continuous ability to communicate by telephone is necessary. Regular use of computers, printers and other peripherals is necessary. Work includes regular handling of small fragile computer components and large components weighing more than 100 pounds. Regular travel to locations throughout the School Division & County is required. Regular contact is made with internal departments and senior persons at all levels of the School Division & County. Contacts are usually cooperative, however require tact and diplomacy. Necessary for external contacts with vendor companies and other IT agencies. Occasional need to perform urgent tasks to meet organizational deadlines. Frequent work activity after normal duty hours, and occasional weekend duties are necessary. ____________________- PG 19 Exempt
