This approach trains students to use the Socratic Method and inquiry approach to learning while leveraging their unique skills and talents equitably and democratically to create a positive culture where all students can find success.Position Goals :
This position collaborates with the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) Team to increase achievement and engagement of all students in grades 6â€"12 mathematics while building teacher capacity. The incumbent will implement research-based math instructional frameworks through mentoring and coaching and assist teachers with planning, classroom strategies, and best practices aligned to secondary mathematics instruction, conceptual understanding, and mathematical reasoning. Odyssey's Coaching Program is designed to provide support for teachers in the classroom, as well as to encourage professional leadership roles for teachers in our District. The Instructional Coach will work side-by-side with teachers to improve student learning outcomes, spending at least 80% of their time directly supporting teacher development and student learning. The Coach does not merely tell others or demonstrate "how to do it," they actually "do it" by providing ongoing, job-embedded professional learning and support in rigorous math instruction, problem solving, and student discourse. As part of the CIA Team, the Instructional Coach assists with the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) in grades 6-12, with a focus on mathematics intervention and enrichment. The incumbent will work with teachers and interventionists to ensure a continuum of instruction, practices, and interventions of varying intensity to meet the needs of all students in math. Responsibilities may include screening students, grouping students, assigning research-based targeted instruction or intervention, monitoring progress, and evaluating effectiveness of implementation. The Coach is a teacher leader who assumes a support role that includes, but is not limited to: Peer coaching Side-by-side coaching cycles Planning, enacting a lesson/part of a lesson, and debriefing Participation in instructional rounds Department and collaborative math team planning Co-teaching and demonstration lessons Analyzing student data to inform math instruction through PLCs Assessment (formative, interim, and summative in math) Proctoring, monitoring, analyzing, and debriefing assessments Action research projects focused on math instruction Facilitating and participating in professional learning and coaching meetings Effective professional learning is job-embedded within a safe, positive environment and built through trusting relationships. An effective Instructional Coach works collaboratively with teachers, the CIA team, principals, and directors to support school and district educational objectives. The Coach serves as a positive role model and "thought partner" in a non-evaluative, non-supervisory role to support teachers in meeting the diverse needs of secondary math learners.Minimum Qualifications :
Must hold or be eligible to hold required State of Delaware Certification Secondary Mathematics certification (grades 6â€"12) required Master's degree, preferred Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in secondary mathematics required, high school preferred Experience working in diverse, low-income communities; sensitivity to and awareness of the needs of culturally diverse students and families Experience in planning and facilitating professional learning Previous experience working as an Instructional or District Coach is strongly preferred Proven track record of improving student achievement in mathematics and using data to drive instruction Experience implementing effective strategies for diverse learners, including those requiring math intervention or enrichment Strong understanding of mathematical practices, content progression (6â€"12), and research-based math pedagogyEssential Duties and Responsibilities :
Coaches, supports, and mentors grades 6â€"12 math teachers in evidence-based instructional practices, including conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application. Works with teachers individually, in math departments, and in collaborative teams to provide practical support across a range of secondary math strategies, including problem-based learning, mathematical discourse, and use of multiple representations. Serves as a math content and pedagogy expert, supporting teachers in aligning instruction to standards, increasing rigor, and utilizing the Eight Effective Math Teaching Practices. Conducts Cycles of Support and Side-by-Side Coaching Cycles using the Student-Centered Coaching model, with a focus on improving student math outcomes. Participates in instructional rounds with a focus on student thinking, engagement, rigor, and HQIM utilization in math classrooms. Facilitates regular meetings with math teachers to examine student work, analyze misconceptions, and monitor progress to inform instruction. Designs and delivers demonstration lessons modeling best practices such as gradual release, inquiry-based learning, math discourse routines, and differentiation. Supports vertical and horizontal alignment of math curriculum and standards across grades 6â€"12, ensuring coherence from middle to high school mathematics. Assists teachers with unit internalization, lesson sequencing, and scaffolding to support diverse learners in mathematics. Supports teachers in integrating the Standards for Mathematical Practice into daily instruction. Assists teachers in selecting and using appropriate instructional materials, technology tools, and assessments to enhance math instruction. Develops and maintains weekly coaching schedules; at least 80% of time is spent in "Teaching and Learning." Collaborates with school administration to develop school-wide and teacher-specific support plans focused on math achievement. Maintains accurate documentation of coaching cycles, PLC meetings, and professional learning. Analyzes a variety of math data sources (interim assessments, state assessments, course performance, etc.) to drive continuous improvement. Assists teachers in disaggregating and using math data to guide instructional decisions and differentiation. Supports MTSS processes by assisting with student identification, placement in math intervention or enrichment, and progress monitoring. Plans and facilitates school-based and district-wide professional learning in secondary math instruction, and provides follow-up coaching to support implementation. Strengthens and sustains math-focused professional learning communities (PLCs). Implements district, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws. Participates in DOE stakeholder meetings (as needed), faculty meetings, professional development, and conferences. Assists with school-wide testing and assessment administration, as needed.Standard Requirements:
Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with students, educators, parents, and community members. Knowledgeable about formative and diagnostic assessments and research based instructional practices. Equity driven, demonstrated sensitivity to issues impacting various cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Superior grasp of effective instructional and behavioral methods and strategies for educating urban youth including but not limited to right brained restorative practices (trauma informed practices), culturally responsive teaching, Social Emotional Learning, grading for equity and coaching for equity.
