General Job Description:
Interns will work in the school Wellness Room to develop treatment programs and services that address the various mental health needs of students, develop student & family supports and resources, develop a school culture in which teachers and other student support staff are trained to recognize the early warning signs of mental health issues with students, help identify waming signs in students, and work toward key ways to mitigate and manage concerning behaviors under the direction and supervision of a licensed supervisor. This is an on-site internship. Candidates will follow the district calendar with hours from 7:45am-3 :45pm, although hours may vary slightly at individual sites. Candidates will be paid according to the district salary schedule under the specialist pay scale with the possibility of a subsequent employment offer for exceptional candidates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide mental health and wellness services and programs that foster pro-social skills and appropriate behavior. Identify the mental health and behavioral needs of students. Develop and implement treatment plans; conduct clinical interviews, assessments, observations, and clinical reports to assist in identifying individual needs and appropriate services. Provide individual and group counseling services. Plan, organize and lead structured programs of therapy activities for students (including but not limited to - anger management, bereavement, etc.). Collaborate with school team and attends various school-site meetings. Gather information about community mental health needs and resources that could be used in conjunction with therapy. Maintain documentation regarding students served and services provided. Demonstrate appropriate skills in working with parents and families. Maintain and facilitate communication with and between families, mental health staff and providers. Maintain contact with community agencies that provide essential services not available through the school district. Referrals will be provided to clients and their families to these agencies when necessary Implement a system of universal screening in coordination with the school-wide system of social-emotional supports for early identification of students at risk. Conduct crisis and/or risk assessment and response. Provide training to students, parents and staffing behavioral and social-emotional related preventions, interventions, and curricula. Provide SEL classes designed to drive student well-being, achievement and healthy school cultures. Serve as a member of the school team and integrate within the school-wide culture and system. Provide behavioral health support within a multi-tiered intervention framework and engage in prevention and intervention activities. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, and community members/agencies. Collect data and prepare a variety of reports, including data entry and retrieval related to grant deliverables and evaluation. Analyze and evaluate situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; maintain confidentiality and discretion, work independently with little direction. Maintain acceptable standards of physical health, energy and emotional adjustment to the job environment. Demonstrate a broad base of knowledge and training to effectively perform job responsibilities. Follow policies and administrative rules and regulations as specified in the Board Policy Manual. Attend face to face and virtual supervision sessions
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as an advocate for students and families. Be familiar with mental health laws and professional code of ethics. Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance. Demonstrate effective organizational skills. Learn about new developments and best practices in the field by reading professional literature, attending courses and seminars, and establishing and maintaining contact with other social service agencies. Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall objective of the position and grant requirements.
Qualifications:
Enrolled in university program for counseling or social work and complete all necessary university paperwork for internship
Preferred Qualifications:
, NM BSW license Advanced standing MSW students who have or are eligible for their NM BSW license-
Physical Requirements:
Balancing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and standing. Interactions with aggressive, disruptive, and/or unruly individuals. Physical exertion. Lifting, carrying (up to 50 pounds), and moving work-related supplies/equipment. Ability to maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions. Occasional and prolonged and irregular working hours.
Equipment/Material Handled:
Must know how to properly operate, or be willing to learn to operate, all multimedia equipment including current technology.
Work Environment:
Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be able to work under stressful conditions. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required. May make site or home visits when needed and appropriate. Extended periods of sitting while using a computer or other device.
