Job Description

The job runs from June 22 to August 21 with staff training dates to be shared at time of hire. Preference given to candidates who can commit to working a minimum of 7 weeks of the program.
Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of Head Counselor, junior counselors are responsible for providing support in overseeing a group of approximately 20 campers. Junior Counselors are counselors who are under the age of 18, who provide direct assistant to Head Counselor and counselors in guiding campers through summer education curriculum, activities, swim time field trips and other camp related experiences. All camp counselors model the Y's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. This role is specific for those who are 16 and 17 years of age.
Essential Functions:
Always know group number, confirming information with head counselor. Review new camper information at the beginning of the week, confirming information with head counselor. Engage with and supervise children using positive guidance and support methods. Implement provided curriculum within group as scheduled, providing support when not directly leading curriculum. Prepare for and actively participate in scheduled swim time. (1 staff must swim with group.) Prepare for and actively participate in camp activities that include dress up days. Ensure that head counselor is given proper documentation and made aware of all behavior challenged, injuries and incidents that occur throughout the day, in a timely manner. Understand, follow, and enforce the safety and health regulations set forth by the YMCA and the Department of Early Education and Care Encourage communication among counselors and campers to leadership to maintain a happy and successful environment Attend and participate in family nights, program activities, staff meetings/trainings, and professional development Represent yourself and the MetroWest YMCA in a positive and professional manner. Be a role model to campers and peers.
Qualifications:
All staff under the age of 18 are required to obtain a work permit from their town of residence before being eligible for employment with the Y. Counselors shall meet one of the set of requirements: A. Be at least 16 year of age and work under the direct supervision of Head Counselor/ Group Leader B. Have a high school diploma or equivalent; or C. Be currently enrolled in high school program or equivalent. First AID/CPR certification is encouraged but not required. (Training is provided and paid for by the Y)
Physical Demands :
Must have the physical ability to plan, lead, and participate in physical camp games and activities. Must be comfortable in outdoor setting in various weather conditions. Works in a busy indoor and outdoor environment. Be comfortable swimming and around bodies of water. Counselors are expected to swim with campers during scheduled times.
